"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." This is what Joe Whitehead was all about. He was totally committed to serving and protecting not only his family and friends, but all of the citizens of Macon, Bibb County, and surrounding areas. I met Joe 2 years ago and the one thing that I remember most is his smile. Although I did not know him for a long period of time, I thank God for giving me the opportunity to meet Joe.
My heart and prayers go out to Joe's family and all of the men and women of the Bibb County Sheriff's Office. God bless all of you.

To the family of Deputy Whitehead, over the last several days I have read the condolences online and people definetly thought alot of your husband, father and friend. I am so sorry for your loss, but God definetly gained another angel in heaven. May God be with your family during this difficult time.

We remembered when we first moved in the neighborhood. We had some problems and along came a man that we didn't know, wanting to help.He introduced himself and from then on when we saw him he would smile and wave. He would look out for us and he will be a missed angle. To the family hold on. Your angle is in god's hands now. We are here to support you .

Many times we take those who swore to protect and serve for granted. I dont know Deputy Whitehead, but knowing this officer put his life on the line for me and you to live a better life is a blessing. I pray that his family stays strong through this tough time, and know that Deputy Whitehead is looking down upon us. Keep his memory alive and lets pray that justice is served.

It has been an Honor and priviledge to have served with you. I admire a person that will stand for what they believe, and not harbor a proud/selfish spirit. Whitehead you are that type person. I will always remember the laughs that we, as well as the rest of the unit have shared together, and the commitment to duty that you have always displayed. You have always displayed the character that has brought nothing but honor to yourself and your loved ones, which I commend you for. I only hope and pray as we part for now, hate does not consume us, and we continue our mission here on this earth as God would have us do."THE DEVIL IS A LIAR AND THE TRUTH AIN'T IN HIM". You will be missed but always remembered.
REST IN PEACE and may God bless you and your family that's left behind.

The loss of any officer in the line of duty is tragic to the family, to the department represented and to the community he served. Deputy Whitehead's loss is particularly painful to this office as he was directly responsible for the successful prosecution of several defendants charged with criminal violations that we handled.

As an undercover officer, he put his life on the line many times to make Macon and Bibb County safe. I am confident the illegal drug activities he had a part in curtailing saved untold lives.

We will miss you and will keep your family in our thoughts and prayers. Well done Faithful Servant.

There is nothing worse than losing a husband, a father, a brother, a co- worker, etc... I have not had the chance to meet deputy Whitehead, but I feel it is my obligation to let he and his family no that there is no job left unseen in the eyes of the Lord. Deputy Whitehead died in the line of duty. His aim was to protect and serve in and in the mist of that he was called home. I have deepest sympathy for the family and friends of Deputy Whitehead, and may the Lord carry you through this hard time.

I am writing to honor the memory of Deputy Whitehead. I did not know him. I do know that he was protecting all that I hold dear and I will hold his family in my prayers. I want to let his wife and children know that I appreciate his willingness to give up his life to make our city a safer place. In a world of crime and hate you can still find people trying to make things better. I appreciate you, Officer Whitehead, and your loved ones.

As a wife of a previous law enforcement officer, I know how difficult a tradgedy like this is for the family, friends, and other officers. I pray that God will watch over them and hold them close to Him during this time. As for Deputy Whitehead, he has now crossed to a place where we all long to be.

To the Family of Deputy Whitehead,
I am the widow of Deputy Thomas Brad Vaughn. Brad and Joe worked together at Central and then again at the Sheriff's Dept. Although Brad did not fall in the line of duty, his love of his job kept him committed to the very end. Rest in the fact that they died LOVING what they did and that they did it for YOU!!!! You, his family, was the reason he went each day and fought for what was right. Also know that the Lord will sustain you and keep you til you can once again be with him. Nothing happens without a reason and although the grief will be great and understanding may never come, ALWAYS know of his love for you and your children. I share your grief and live with loss and questions every day. But I also know that as Deputies wives WE know that OUR HUSBANDS are HEROS of a very special kind. Also, raise your children in that HERO spirit and always remember that YOU are a hero too. We your Sheriff's Dept. family will help to carry you when you feel you can no longer go on and we will keep Joe's memory alive in the heart of the community that he so proudly served and died. Our thoughts and prayers go with you during these most difficult times and know we will always be there for you.

Deputy Whitehead,
I will miss seeing your smiling face. That is my fondest memory of you. Many times when I would leave work the Drug Unit would be out in the back getting ready to do a search warrant, or go out on a special detail. I would always pray that everyone would be safe. My thoughts and prayers are with your family during this difficult time. Love, Regina Stokes
