I attended Nick's Memorial and Funeral as part of the Tucson Sector Honor Guard. Each agent's passing takes a toll and weighs heavily on our hearts. Greenig's was no exception. One cannot express the sadness and loss we all feel. As the viewings, and memorials came and went, I saw something very special grow amongst the Border Patrol family. The spirit of Nick's life was kept aflame by everyone who knew him. I truely believe we never lost Nick, we just extended our family.

Hearing about him and his service to our country at his funeral in Ajo filled me with pride in our duty and gave me a powerful memory to take with me to Afghanistan next year. Nick is missed most by his family. I will always remember their words about loving him and his love for the Lord.

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Everytime I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the man they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Agent Greenig. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. You will be in my thoughts.

From reading all the reflections left for Nick, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Nick's life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Nick's life was about so much more than the way he died. Nick will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.

Agent Greenig, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been three years but we still miss him terribly.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

A P.A.s Prayer

Lord, we never asked that You always set things up
So that we could cut sign into the sun.
Even when we sweated gallons in the heat and
Our teeth chattered in the freezing cold,
We never asked You to stop the elements
Just for us.
In the midst of gasoline rationing and
Budget cuts,
We still went through doors,
We jumped the freights,
We rode the line.
We never expected You to change things
Just for us.
When one of us or an innocent was wounded or killed
We still trusted You;
Even though we didn’t always understand.
We just pray, Lord, that You give us grace enough
To live our lives as Your officers
As we continue the line watch
On this side of the Jordan River~
That when we finally get to the High County,
Beyond the timberline,
A place where smugglers don ‘t exist,
Where the water’s cool,
The coffee’s hot,
And where all of us can shoot one-inch groups;
That You’ll look at the visa
We got at Your Embassy down here and say:
“Welcome home, P.A, this is the Best detail of your life!”

Through these fields of destruction
Baptism of fire
I've watched all your suffering
As the battles raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms

Rarely have I ever heard so many people say such great things about a man with such sincerity and conviction. Agent Greenig, you have left a legacy by the way you lived your life, and the impact that you have had and will continue to have on those in your life. I know that you are missed by your fellow agents and your friends and family. May the Lord bless and keep those who you have left behind. We will carry your memory on.
Thank you Sir for your sacrifice.

I attended the funeral for Nick Greenig yesterday. I went to pay my respects to an agent who I thought that I had never met.

During the service two of his classmates spoke. The first began with the story of their EOD. It went something like this:

The training officer looked at the class and questioned who was going to what station. When we six trainees told him we were going to Ajo he gave us a look of "who did you piss off".

That was when I realized that I had met Nick Greenig. I was the training officer. For many, I was the first agent that had given them the "down and dirty" about being an agent and what work in the field was like. I never thought nor did I want to think that I would be going to a funeral of one of the many trainees I EODed. I told them that it was a dangerous job and unfortunately Nick is the proof. From what I heard at the memorial Nick was an outstanding agent and an even better man. I only wish I had the chance to know him better.

Your tour is done here, Nick. We will take your watch. Thank you and Godspeed.

We're not fellow officers, we're friends of family and knew Nick since he was a baby. He was a very wonderful and likeable child. I'm not surprised he grew up to be a wonderful man. He had great parents and siblings. My heart goes out to all who knew him and are grieving.

They called him Nicholas Greenig, Senior Border Patrol Agent.

But he was known as a cohort of the Border Patrol Academy's 531st Class, a partner to many at the Ajo, Arizona Border Patrol station, a son to Dwayne and Darla, and little brother to his family.

And so many others knew Nick Greenig as a friend.

In her message to the entire Customs and Border Patrol family, acting commissioner Deborah Spero wrote, "The death of Agent Greenig reminds us all of the very real dangers that our agents and officers face, every day, while securing the borders of the United States."

Her somber words stand as a very real reminder to other heros who stand in service to our nation and to the families who offer them as gifts of sacrifice.

I acknowledge the excellence of Agent Nicholas Greenig. He used his good intellect, his keen intuition and his excellent law enforcement skills every day, in the face of many dangers, to do his level best to secure the safety of people--in the United States--and beyond our borders.

He never waivered in his oath, taken on April 16, 2003 in Charleston, South Carolina as he stood with my son and many others, to uphold the laws of the United States. He, like many other sons and daughters, husbands and wives serving in the Border Patrol, sacrificed time with his family and time to himself to take on difficult and sometimes thankless assignments. Like all of these incredible men and women, Nick worked long hours and in difficult circumstances to patrol our borders--sometimes at all hours of the day and night.

His work, often unnoticed by the majority was honored and appreciated by all of the colleagues who stood along side him during rainstorms and sandstorms, on cold nights and hot days, in the face of danger and in many moments of laughter and camaraderie.

It is a sad truth that Agent Nichols D. Greenig will be absent from the Border Patrol ranks, but Nick Greenig will never be far from the memories of those who worked by his side, from his loving family and friends or from the thoughts of agents present and future who will see his service as a standard for the United States Border Patrol.

As the mother of a son who graduated the academy with Nick and who continues his service to our nation, my heartfelt thanks to you, Nick, for serving so faithfully and for keeping your promise as oathed on that beautiful spring day so few years ago.

Nick's family should know that their beloved boy is honored and celebrated by so many. I offer my humble and sincere thanks to you for gifting our nation this great American hero! I join with you in tears of great sadness for your loss and in joy for your son's life well lived.
