Reflections for Trooper Andrew J. "AJ" Sperr

Trooper Sperr,
Rest assured, God will deal with the animals who caused your life to come to an abrupt halt. Know that your family will always be proud of you, I am certain. You will always be hailed as a hero in my eyes, and I am proud to have shared your title. May your family feel God's love during the hard times to follow.

I have taught thousands of young Air Force cops for 5 years at our training academy, and have nearly 10 years in the job. I know that stories like his are told and re-told with honor and reverence. They play a major role in the learning process and shaping of the next generation of law enforcement. Trooper Sperr's legacy will continue to inspire many others for years to come...His job is far from over! Thank you Andrew and to your family for the sacrifice you have given.

I want to be a police officer, and hopefully that will be happening very soon. As part of the Greece Police Explorer Program, I feel as though I have become part of the biggest gang in America, the Blue gang. I also feel that I am part of the "family" already. I did not personally know Trooper Sperr, but as Rochester Mayor (former Rochester Police Chief) Robert Duffy said "whenever an officer dies that it's like losing a member of your family." I send my deepest sympathy to the family, friends and the law enforcment family. I'm sure he was as great a guy as newspapers say, and he has history in Chemung County. He will NEVER be forgotten. He is an inspiration to me to live up to his success in Law Enforcement. May he rest in peace and guard the gates/streets of Heaven while he waits for the rest of his family, friends and L.E family, so he can welcome them home!
God Speed Trooper Sperr! Gone but not forgotten!

I am deeply saddened to learn of the untimely death of Trooper Andrew J. Sperr. Although I did not have the great fortune to know Trooper Sperr, I am grateful that beautiful human beings, like Trooper Sperr, who dedicate their lives to protect others are placed on this Earth. God demanded Trooper Sperr's return to protect all of us.

Dear Brother,

THE PLICEMAN STOOD AND FACED GOD,
WHICH MUST ALWAYS COME TO PASS.
HE HOPED HIS SHOES WERE SHINING,
JUST AS BRIGHTLY AS HIS BRASS.

"STEP FORWARD NOW, POLICEMAN.
HOW SHALL I DEAL WITH YOU?
HAVE YOU ALWAYS TURNED THE OTHER CHEEK?
TO MY CHURCH HAVE YOU BEEN TRUE?"

THE POLICEMAN SQUARED HIS SHOULDERS AND SAID, "NO LORD, I GUESS I AIN'T,
BECAUSE THOSE OF US WHO CARRY A BADGE
CANT ALWAYS BE A SAINT."

I'VE HAD TO WORK MOST SUNDAYS,
AND AT TIMES MY TALK WAS ROUGH,
AND SOMETIMES I'VE BEEN VIOLENT,
BECAUSE THE STREETS ARE AWFULLY TOUGH.

BUT I NEVER TOOK A PENNY,
THAT WASN'T MINE TO KEEP
THOUGHT I WORKED A LOT OF OVERTIME
WHEN THE BILLS GOT JUST TOO STEEP.

AND I NEVER PASSED A CRY FOR HELP,
THOUGH AT TIMES I SHOOK WITH FEAR.
AND SOMETIMES, GODD GORGIVE ME,
I'VE WEPT UNMANLY TEARS.

I KNOW I DONT'T DESEVER A PLACE
AMONG THE PEOPLE HERE.
THEY NEVER WANTED ME AROUND
EXCEPT TO CALM THEIR FEAR.

IF YOU'VE A PLACE FOR ME HERE, LORD,
IT NEEDNT'T BE SO GRAND.
I NEVER EXPECTED OR HAD TOO MUCH,
BUT IF YOU DON'T I'LL UNDERSTAND.

THERE WAS A SILENCE ALL AROUND THE THRONE WEHRE THE SAINTS HAD OFTEN TROD.
AS THE POICEMAN WAITED QUIETLY,
FOR THE JUDGEMENT OF HIS GOD.

"STEP FORWARD NOW, POLICEMAN,
YOU'VE BORN YOUR BURDENS WELL.
COME WALK A BEAT ON THE HEAVEAN'S STREET, YOU'VE DONE YOUR TIME IN HELL"

May your family, brothers, and friends take these words and use them to ease their minds and hearts. I hope they know that a nation morns with you all

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family and fellow officers of Trooper Sperr.

While no one who wears a badge wants to be put into such a situation, you put yourself into the line of fire to protect those whom you might not have even known, despite the danger. While I did not have the privilege to have known him personally, I am certain that he has found a place in heaven.

Rest in peace my friend; those of us who remain will cover your post on the thin blue line.

Police Officer's Prayer to St. Michael:
Saint Michael, heaven's glorious commissioner of police,
who once so neatly and successfully cleared God's premises of all its undesirables, look with kindly and professional eyes on your earthly force.
Give us cool heads, stout hearts, and uncanny flair for investigation and wise judgement.
Make us the terror of burglars, the friend of children and law-abiding citizens, kind to strangers, polite to bores, strict with law-breakers and impervious to temptations.
You know, Saint Michael, from your own experiences with the devil that the police officer's lot on earth is not
always a happy one; but your sense of duty that so pleased God, your hard knocks that so surprised the devil, and your angelic self-control give us inspiration.
And when we lay down our night sticks, enroll us in your heavenly force, where we will be as proud to guard the throne of God as we have been to guard the city of all the people. Amen.

Go In Peace

One heck of a Trooper....A dearly loved, admired, and respected son, brother, uncle, and last, but by no means least, friend. What a legacy Trooper Sperr! You had put your life on the line more than once for this area...you did not lose your life, Sir...you gave it..willingly... for us all. God Speed.

On behalf of the New York State Park Police I would like to express my deepest condolences. Throughout the years I have had the pleasure of working closely with many Troopers from Troop K. Although I never met Trooper Sperr I feel as though I have lost a personal friend. He exemplified the highest standards of his agency and served as a great role model to other Troopers throughout the state. The great ones die young. Rest in peace and vaya con dios.
