As a 19-year-old daughter of a NYS trooper, I have painfully struggled with the death of Trooper Andy Sperr. Although I did not personally know Trooper Sperr, my heart sank when I heard that such a dedicated, loyal, and amazing man was taken from our world. And though I have yet to understand why such a great man would be taken from this earth I am thankful for his duty. I am thankful for his willingness to do his job to the best ability and to sacrifice his life for the public. I will forever be grateful for Trooper Andy Sperr for enabling my father and all other troopers to return home safely that night, for it is he who allowed that. May you Rest In Peace Trooper Sperr.

Trooper Sperr, I sincerely believe that each of us is put on this earth for a reason/purpose. There is no doubt what your purpose was!!! Though I didn’t know you personally, my husband did. From everyone’s account, you were the type of person we all should strive to be: loving, caring, unselfish, dedicated to family and friends, and most of all, dedicated to a profession you loved. Though we can never understand why God would take such a wonderful individual as yourself from us, we have to take comfort in knowing that your life has left a profound and life-long affect on those of us you left behind. Your unselfish act of heroism will never be forgotten – your brother officers will not let that happen! My thoughts and prayers are with you, your family, friends, and fellow police officers.

SACRIFICE

There is no greater sacrifice,
Any man will ever see.
Then to have a brave Policeman,
Giving up his life for me.

To all of those who passed away,
I want to be so sure.
Their names will be remembered,
For now, and ever more.

I wish that I could call each one,
By their given name.
To let them know we won't forget,
Their courage and their fame.

They chose this great profession,
And served with all their might.
Not fearing all the danger,
To them each day and night.

Yes, they had picked to walk a path
Where very few have gone.
And now they are protecting,
Heaven, from dust till dawn.

So let's all pray they're happy,
In heaven up above.
While in safety they are doing,
The job they dearly love.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends and fellow troopers of Trooper Sperr.

To the family and friends of Trooper Andrew Sperr and his fellow troopers with the New York State Police:

I was so saddened to learn of the tragic death of another young law enforcement officer. On behalf of our entire family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Trooper Sperr was brutally murdered in the line of duty.
Even though he had been shot, he was still able to return fire which helped apprehend those despiciable criminals.

I am so glad that the perpetrators have been caught, and I hope Trooper Sperr's family gets the full measure of justice they deserve for A.J.'s senseless murder and the devastating impact it has on his family.

May you all be comforted and supported by your law enforcement family, and by other police survivors who share this painful journey with you.

In reading the reflections about A.J., it is obvious that he was well-respected and cared for by many people.
His valor and dedication will never be forgotten, and his memory will be forever revered. To have already served ten years as a peace officer at such a young age is an amazing feat in itself.

To his parents, I share your agony of losing your child to gunfire in the line of duty. My heart breaks for you and your family.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Trooper Sperr gave to his community and the citizens of Louisiana, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on March 1, 2006.

Words are inadequate to express the grief and sorrow that we feel. Your family will have to go on with the knowledge that you died doing a job that you loved. But they will also be comforted by knowing that you lived a full life that gave joy to many. May you rest in eternal peace.

I REMEMBER WHEN TPR SPERR FIRST REPORTED TO SP MONROE WHERE I WAS A SERGEANT. I LOOKED AT HIS DATE OF BIRTH AND TOLD HIM I DIDN'T LIKE HIM. HE ASKED "WHY" AND INDICATED THAT HE DID NOT DO ANYTHING WRONG. I TOLD HIM THAT HE WAS THE FIRST TROOPER I MET WHO WAS BORN AFTER I JOINED THE NYSP (10/5/72). WE BOTH LAUGHED AND SUBSEQUENTLY WENT FISHING A FEW TIMES AFTER THAT.
RIP - TPR SPERR. I WILL REMEMBER YOU ALWAYS.

SERGEANT JOHN F WIEGERT JR (RET)

It is such a shame when an Officer pays the ultimate price to keep us safe and protected. I wish New York State could enforce the death penalty upon the trash that kills our Police Officers. It is their families and friends that suffer the greatest while these animals serve minimal terms to return to the streets to kill again. Trooper Sperr you are in my prayers as well as all fallen Officers who paid the ultimate price. Thank you for your service to man and community and may you be eternally rewarded in the Heavens, God Bless, Hero.

A Greatful Citizen
