Officer Manion no words can express how sorry I am that this has happened to you. I will never really understand why nor will your family, friends, co workers the community or the entire brotherhood of officers but I have learned one can't understand. After my Kevin was taken from us I was given a scrapebook with an engraved plate on the front = "Lean not on your own understanding" from Proverbs. I hope all those who miss you so very very much will be able to draw strength from these words and be able to continue their journey through this life strengthened by God's love.

Policeman's 23rd Psalm

The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want,
His comforting hand reduces fear to naught;
He makes me walk through streets of crime,
But He gives me courage and peace of mind.

He leads me by still waters in the path I trod,
And He says in Romans I'm a "minister of God,"
He leads me in righteousness as He restores my soul,
For His name's sake He keeps me whole.

When I walk through death's valley, right up to the door,
I will fear no evil, for He comforts me more;
For Thou art with me every step of the way,
As thy rod and thy staff protect me each day.

He prepares a table, especially for me,
As I work daily among life's enemies;
He gives me authority to uphold the law,
And He anoints my position in the midst of it all.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me,
Each day of my life through eternity;
As I long to hear Him say, "Well done...,"
When I lay down my life, my badge, and my gun.

Kevin was one of my classmates from the Class of 96 and he was a good guy. We ran track and cross country together, so I was shocked to hear about his death. He will be missed.

Kevin,

I never met you, since you were hired after I retired, but I feel I know you from what I have read about you. You are one of the few Troops meeting their fate I never knew, either as an acquaintance or personal friend since 1971. The first was Trooper James (Jim) R. Hughes a shift mate and close personal friend. I mention him only because your lives seem to have paralleled each other so closely. He too was an unashamed Christian and an outstanding member of our Department. He too was only out of the academy about three years, but he accomplished so much in that short period of time as I am sure you did also. It was hard for me to reconcile why such a good man with such potential should be take from us. Then I remembered he memorized and repeated the Trooper’s Pledge “I will consider no sacrifice too great in the performance of my duty”. Who am I to question his judgment or God’s wisdom?

Your portrait will hang in the Hall of Hero’s and you will be the source of inspiration to thousands of young men and women who will follow you into harms way. Your memory will live forever through the Department and through the lives of the people you have touched. You have fought the good fight and you have kept the faith. Now it’s time to rest.

I say this to your family and friends. Take comfort in the sure and certain knowledge we will see all our brothers again someday.

My prayers go out to the family and friends of Trooper Manion. Although many in the law enforcement community will never meet one another, we consider each other our brothers and sisters - our family. Bless you, my brother, and thank you for the ultimate, yet untimely, sacrifice that you have made for the community which you were chosen to protect. God bless.
