"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Elizabeth,

We met your family on Thursday in Springfield at the memorial. We shared stories and tried to help as much as we could, you have a great family and they held up strong and you should be proud. We will fly a Blue ribbon just for you and your family, may they continue to heal.

We met your parents down in Springfield a few days ago, such nice people. I know how they feel and the emptyness in their hearts without you. There have been many silent tears by those that love you dearly and they will never forget you. You are a true hero and heroes never die. Keep watch over your loved ones and those still out on patrol. You will never be forgotten.

I was almost 6 when I first laid eyes on you. Even though you were suppose to be a brother, I loved you and swore to always protect you. Somewhere along the way you took on the same role and not only me, you protected your community and your country. Then you gave your life for that role. Thank you. Im so proud of you. (And Im glad you were a girl)

Friends, Family and co-workers of Liz:
Please always know that as time goes by our thoughts are still with you all. We do not forget.
We will be at the Illinois memorial in May as we have been for the last seven years, long before we lost one of our own, when the mere thought of adding the name of one we loved so much was a definite improbability. This year we will again be there to honor all those on the memorial, those we knew and loved like your Liz and our Dane, and those who we know only through the faces and tears of friends, families, and co-workers. We will NEVER forget their courage, sacrifice, families nor the smiles we used to share....

Dear Elizabeth and Family,

I went to Freed-Hardeman with you and shared a thousand memories with you. When I heard of your loss last year I was devastated. Marci was able to come say good bye to you and I am deeply sorry I was not able to come. I sent you a beautiful bunch of flowers to brighten the day. In about a month I am going to be pining a badge on my chest and I am dedicating that day to the memory of you. I will always miss you! I hope to be with you in heaven some day and share many more memories together. May God be with you and your family always.

Love you!

To the Family & Friends of Elizabeth: I am a rider for the Police Unity Tour, Virginia Chapter. We ride 250 miles in 2 & 1/2 days (on bicycles) in honor of our fallen sisters and brothers. I was born & raised in Southern Illinois (Jonesboro, where my family still lives) and asked specifically to wear the bracelet bearing Elizabeth's name this year. So I will ride into Washington, DC this May in her honor. Peace be with you all...

It has almost been a year since I prayed for God to let you live. When I got to the wreck site I had no idea that it would be the last time I ever got to tell you how much you were loved by this family. As I held your hand that day I knew life as we knew would never be the same. I beleive that you are now Lucas's guardian angel and he will always have you with him. There is not a day that goes by that I dont think of you and wish I could have done something that day to save you. This world is a better place for having you in it. For anyone who reads this I want them to know how caring and giving Liz was. She truly deserves all the kind words and praise that I've read on the site. I miss her more than any words can say.
I love you Liz
