Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Trooper Steven Roy Smith

Growing up in a fire station, I got to know a lot of OK Highway Patrol officers, including Steve. He actually got me a job at a gas station and would regularly stop by to check in while on patrol. It was only a few months later after joining the Navy that I received a call he had been shot in the line of duty. It was devastating to hear about what had happened, and moreso when he passed.

He was well loved and respected by everyone who knew him. The community lost a great officer; those who knew him lost an amazing friend.

Hey buddy, I just came over to the ODMP to see how many officer we have lost to COVID and to pray for their family and friends. Of course I can't come on here with out coming to see you. I don't know why because I always leave with tears in my eyes. 2020 was not our best year. We lost Kelly last year to cancer and some family and friends to COVID. On a good note I have two new granddaughters and a grandbaby on the way and they are the GREATEST! As always you very much loved and missed.

I knew Trooper Smith when I lived in Pryor OK. I met him while having lunch one day with some of my Fire Department buddies. He was a regular guy who had become a trooper in his thirties. As a brown shirt he was strict but fair, using discretion wisely. He drew a hard line against drug related offenses. In my opinion he was one of the finest Troopers I have ever known and a great human being. My vehicles still wear the 725 emblems that were made to honor him

Hey Uncle Steve. I have been thinking about you a lot lately and I miss you like crazy. Every chance I get I ask dad to tell me a story about you. I love nothing more than hearing him talk about you. We all miss you so much and think of you all the time. We love you.

Dad, It's just so unreal to think that it's been 9 years today. Not a day goes by I don't think about you but, I know your not suffering in that wheel chair anymore and I'm just the selfish one who wants you to still be here. I love you so much dad! You are and will forever be my hero!

I heard Stephanie Smith give a speech at the Cloquet High School Letter Winners Banquet on May 18th. She spoke without notes about her father, her mother and the impact that they and athletics had on her life. Her account of her father's death and the strength she got from athletics was very moving. She is a tribute to her father and her mother.

I think our Red Birds just might win it again this year! The dean of my medical school told me yesterday that I was a great leader. I told him I get that from my dad. He also said I will be a great doctor, and to that I said, "Well, I had a great first patient!" Hope Heaven is wonderful!

Hey Partner,
I think of you often! I miss you alot...You were always there for me as a partner and friend. I miss the way you looked at life, I find my self saying to myself, "I wonder what ol Steve would think about this situation". I usually draw a pretty funny conclusion...Thank you for Helping me grow up years ago. No doubt you would still be running 18 contacts a day and giving these young boys something to compete for!
I love ya bro

Uncle Steve,
I remember staying up late one night watching tv in my room and dad coming in and told me you had passed away. I don't think I really knew what to think. We saw you all the time, but I never really got to know you, because I little and It made me nervouse that you were in a wheelchair. But you can't even amagine how much I love you and how much I wish you where still here, so I would get the chance to get to know you. I always love hearing dad tell stories about what you two did together. I feel like I know you more know then I did when you were here. I can't wait to see you again some day. Love you so much, and if you not to busy coming May make sure to watch me walk across stage to get my diploma, becuase I'll be missing you.

I FIRST MET TROOPER SMITH IN 1999 IN MAYES COUNTY WHEN HE ASKED ME IF I HAD ANY PLANS FOR DINNER IN WHICH I JOINED HIM AT THE DUTCH PANTRY IN CHOUTEAU. I REMEMBER AFTER THAT FIRST MEETING RESPONDING ON CALLS WITH HIM IN WHICH HE WAS THE CONSTANT PROFESSIONAL. I ALSO, SADLY, REMEMBER EATING WITH HIM AT DEL RIO YEARS AFTER SEEING HIM WHEELCHAIR BOUND. I REMEMBER THE LAST THING HE SAID TO ME WHEN I LEFT THAT NIGHT, REGRETFULLY THE LASTTIME I SAW HIM, WAS STEVE SAYING, "STAY SAFE". THAT HAS ALWAYS STUCK WITH ME THROUGH THE YEARS, NO MATTER HOW HE WAS DOING HE WAS ALWAYS CONCERNED FOR OTHERS. REST IN PEACE, YOU ARE TRULY MISSED.
