Reflections for Sergeant Henry Prendes

Henry was one of my rookies. Even in those early days I knew he was special. He truly cared about his job and knew what it meant to serve our community. When I was a lieutenant and he was an officer at Northeast Area Command, he was always there to help out, volunteer, and do whatever it took to make things better. People - civilians, would come to me unsolicited and tell me how special he was. He made such a difference, I can't begin to tell you how much. Henry, God has always blessed you. Thank you for being in our lives. We will look after your family in any way we can; as a Metro family and among those who made it through our tour of duty. GOD Bless you. We will miss you brother. Your brother in the badge,

To the family of Sergeant Prendes, May the Lord wrap his arms around you in comfort today and in the days to come. Being from Southern California, I did not have the honor to meet Sgt. Prendes. However, I am sure on that day, he will hear "Well done good and faithful servant".
Heavenly Father, I come to You just now to lift up the family and friends of Sergeant Prendes. I ask that You comfort them at this most sorrowful time. Wrap them in Your arms and give them peace. Thank You for this young man who put his life on the line to serve others. May he rest in peace. In Jesus name, AMEN

Prendes Family~
13 years ago this month, when I was 13 years old, I met someone special named Ariaen...though Ariaen didn't speak much about his family history, the one thing he did speak much about was his brother-in-law Henry and his 2 cute litle nieces! Brooke and Kylee, I still hear your little voices in the background when I was on the other end of the phone. Now, you're all grown up, beautiful young ladies and I can only imagine the pride in your father's heart that you are his little girls, forever! Ariaen thought so highly of Henry he would tell everyone his last name was Prendes. Though I only heard of Henry from Ariaen, I do know just how deeply this hero has touched the lives of people he wasn't even aware of, mine included. May the good Lord look over your family and keep you safe and live with peace in your hearts. Henry, though dearly missed and remembered forever, is now at peace, rewarded for his honorable duty to this city and his family. God bless you all, may he give you the strengh to see the light at the end of the tunnel...Jennifer (Giammarino) Mann

As a deputy planning a trip this week to Las Vegas from southern Illinois as a break with my officer husband, we were saddened by the loss suffered by your department, your community, and do indeed share your sorrow. We have been there, and we will always remember our losses and have a special place in our hearts for others who have suffered also. A Part of America Died

Somebody killed a policeman today
And a part of America died
A piece of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried with him at his side
The suspect who shot will stand up in court,
With counsel demanding his rights
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,
and spend long, lonely nights
The beat that he walked was a battlefield too,
Just as if he'd gone to war
Though the flag of out nation won't fly at half mast,
To his name they will add a gold star
Yep, somebody killed a policeman today,
In your town or mine
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
A cop put his life on the line
Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
And he stands at each new rookie's side
He answered the call, of himself gave his all
And a part of America died.

My father was a police officer in East Chicago, IN. He retired in 1974. I can still remember how I felt when he would go to work. Fortunately, my worse fears were never realized. I can only imagine what you are going through. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. May God Bless you and keep you in your time of sorrow.

Today Las Vegas is in mourning. I never knew Sgt. Prendes, but I am truly sad for the loss to the family and to our community. I think of all of the little boys and girls when they are young and how they say things like, "When I grow up, I want to be a policeman, or a fireman, or a Doctor," and I realize that even as small children it is almost instinctual that we are our brother's keeper and that we truly do want to help each other to make the world a better place. We truly do start, at even a young age to know the importantce of caring about each other. I believe that Sgt. Prendes had that core belief that we are here to make the world a better place. As children we do not realize how dangerous such a beautiful thought can be. As adults we know the danger. It is ever present in the thoughts and minds of the officers and family members. How sobering to be a Las Vegan today and to realize the heavy price for serving us can become. Today I reflect on the great price that these officers pay every day and my heart goes out to each and every man and woman that wears the badge that truly is a badge of courage. With love and sympathy. P. Garcia
