Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Trooper Matthew DeWayne Myrick

I was honored to be able to spend time with you Christy and your beautiful children Matilyn and Tate at the 2007 COPS Kids Camp. I hope you felt all the love we have for you and the survivors of Matt. I hope the week was helpful to you and those two little angels and I can't wait to see them again in the future. God bless you and your entire family.

This year your name will be carved into the wall in Washington D.C. Several of your fellow Troopers will be there to salute you as your name is added to the roster. We ride in the Police Unity Tour whose motto is: "We ride for those who died." I hope to see your family at the wall as we honor and remember you. You will never be forgotten. Rest well Brother, we have the watch.

A blue bracelet honoring Trooper Myrick has been on my wrist for the last month and will be on May 12th as the Police Unity Tour arrives in D.C. as I have the honor and priviledge to ride in memory of him. I would be honored to meet his family and present the bracelet to them at memorial. My condolences for their loss...

The Absent One

As we gather at the table and watch each smiling face
The heart fills with emotion to see the vacant place.
We may strive to hide our longing in the midst
Of mirth and fun
But we're thinking, thinking, thinking
Of the loved- the absent one.

When we gather 'round the fireside with merry
Laughter and jest
How we wish the absent dear one was here
With all the rest.
Still we join in all the frolic, but we wish the day
Was done
For we're thinking, thinking, thinking
Of the loved- the absent one.

Yet when the day is over and they all have gone to rest
We feel the Heavenly Father does all things for the best
So we cheer our drooping spirits with the rising
Of the sun
But we can't help thinking, thinking, thinking
Of the loved- the absent one. author unknown

Dear Family of Trooper Myrick, May the peace only God can give,be upon each of you as the holiday's draw near. It seems to be harder that time of year. Try to keep in your hearts that there are others that will be thinking of you. It seems in some ways, that time has gone by fast that first year yet the longest you ever had in your life. But HERO'S live forever in our heart. As i read reflection's left on Matt's memorial page, i know he must have been a very special person to many people. Matt will be spending his first Christmas in Heaven this year. Can you imagine the celebrating the birth of our Saviour along with all the other fallen HERO'S? So please know that other's share your loss, but in the family of fallen officer's they will never be forgotten.love and prayers carolyn moore, mother-in-law of Sgt.Jeffrey T.Hewitt EOW 04-04-04

GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.
Rest in peace my brother...

"Last Inspection"
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"
The Policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a Saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
that wasn't mine to keep.
Though I worked a lot of overtime
when the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
among the people here.
They never wanted me around
except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
but if you don't...I'll understand
there was silence all around the throne
Where the Saints had often trod
as the policeman waited quietly,
for the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
you’ve borne your burdens well
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
you’ve done your time in Hell."

When the Lord was creating peace officers, he was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, " You've done alot of fiddling around on that one.And the Lord said,"Have you read the specs on this order?" " A peace officer must be able to run five miles through alleys in the dark, scale walls, enter homes the health inspector wouldn't touch and not wrinkle his uniform."He has to be able to sit in an undercover car all day on a stakeout, cover a homicide that night, canvas the neighborhood for witnesses, and testify in court the next day." He has to be in top physical condition at all times, running on black coffee and half-eaten meals. And he has to have six pairs of hands." The angel shook her head and said," Six pairs of hands.. there's no way.""It's not the hands causing the problem," said the Lord,"It's the three pairs of eyes an officer has to have." "That's on the standard model?" asked the angel. The Lord nodded."One pair that sees through a bulge in a pocket before he asks,"may I see what's in there, sir?" "when he already knows wat it is.Another pair in the front that can look reassuringly at a bleeding victim and say, " you'll be alright, ma'am, when he knows that it isn't 100% so.""Lord," said the angel touching his sleeve,"rest and work on this tomorrow." I can't," said the Lord. "I already have a model than can talk a 250 pound drunk into a patrol car without incident and feed a family of 5 on civil servant pay." The angel circle the model of the peace officer very slowly."Can it think?" she asked."You bet,it can tell you the elements of hundreds of crimes, recite the Miranda warnings in its sleep;detain, investigate, search and arrest a gang member in less time than it takes five learned judges to debate the legality of the stop..and still keep its sense of humor."This officer also has phenomenal personal control.""He can deal with crime scenes painted in HELL, coax a confession from a child abuser, comfort a murder victim's family, and then read in the newspaper how law enforcement is insensitive to the rights of criminal suspects." Finally the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the peace officer. "There's a leak," she pronounced," I told you that you were trying to put too much into this model.""That's not a leak," said the Lord."It's a tear." "What's the tear for?" asked the angel. "It's for the bottled up emotions, for fallen comrades, for commitment to a piece of cloth called the American Flag that so many have forgotten, and for justice."" You are a genius," exclaimed the angel. The Lord looked somber," I didn't put the tear there," He said.

Its been a little over 4 months since I received a call from home (Amarillo) telling me that we lost a DPS officer. I still remember it like it was yesterday. Growing up in TX, I know the honor and dedication each and every officer that wears that uniform carries. Its the same I would assume that every officer in this country carries. From reading the posts about Trooper Myrick, he had the same honor and dedication. It still saddens me to know that this was a man who loved everything about life and was not afraid to express his faith in God. The world has so few men and women willing to live and love with that kind of passion.
May the Lord be with your family and keep them safe until you meet again. Thank you Trooper Myrick

I am sorry for your loss. My best friend was Trooper B.J. Zachary. We lost him on January 1. B.J. was like a brother to me, so I know your pain of losing a family member. We wonder why? The only thought that got me through losing B.J. was that God knew B.J. and now Matt were ready to come home, their eternal home. When you get to feeling down, remember that Matt will never hurt again. He will only cry tears of joy as he is resting high on that mountain. I used to hate to see a black and white car on the Interstate and now it makes me proud. My thoughts and prayers are with you and remember Matt will always be with you. Jon

I work in the district command office for Matt's area. The thing that saddens me the most is that I didn't get to know him better. I can recall him coming in to bring in paperwork, from time to time, always with a smile and kind word, but sometimes you don't get to see how special a person is, until they are gone. This incident has caused me and the other office staff to take the time to look at the name tags and put the names with the faces and get to know them.

Christy, I am not only a coworker of Matt's, but I am also a law enforcement officer's wife. You and I have gotten to meet a couple of times, since his funeral. I can't even begin to know what you are going through, but I can imagine it. Every LEO wife thinks about the "what if's," but quickly dismisses it, because it's just too painful to think about. I pray continual peace be rained upon you and the kids from God's throne. HE will get you through this.

The greatest comfort was attending Matt's life celebration (funeral). I was so moved by Matt's (and your) commitment to Jesus and your faith. Now I know how you have remained so strong, sister. How blessed it will be when we are reunited with those we have lost. We realize it's a temporary loss. Matt has been an inspiration for a lot of people, and...trust me...he CONTINUES to do so. Our Lord must be SO proud.

God bless you and your family!
