As the anniversary of my late fiancé's EOW passes it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to start off the new year without the man they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Officer May, especially to his wife. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. If you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me.

From reading all the reflections left for Richard, he sounds like he was a great man and a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Richard's life and the MAN that he was. His life was about so much more than the way he died. Remember that "Wherever a beautiful soul has been ... there is a trail of beautiful memories." Richard will live on in those memories.

Officer May, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been three years but we still miss him terribly.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

I met Richard May for the first time in May of 2002 when he and his family came to Tucson for the wedding of our eldest daughter, Wendy, to Richard's best friend, Michael Nielsen. Mike and Rich had been friends since the seventh grade, so Mike asked Rich to be in the wedding party. As a parent of three daughters, I was immediately drawn to the May family and their three lovely daughters.

As a mother, I was so impressed by the warmth and wonderful manners that Rich displayed. It was a pleasure to be in his company and his smile was so engaging. He seemed to be a great husband and father and I regret that our family will never see him again. He played an important role in our family's history and we shall never forget Rich, Diana, or their daughters.

Officer May, may you rest in peace up above in heaven. Jan. 7, 2006 was your calling to our heavenly father. You will always be remembered as our hero and you will never be forgotten. Thank you for your services here on earth and you have made this earth a better place for our children, for that I thank you. You have given the ultimate sacrifice for that I thank you. I cannot express enough my gratitude and sincerity for all you've done, but I know it has given a purpose to continue serving the citizens of California. God speed and Semper Fi!

Lord,
He was yours to give,
and yours to call home,
please stand by his brothers,
so they don't feel alone,
dry the tears of his family,
so they clearly see:
that he gave his all,
so all could have peace.
Blessed are they,
the children of God,
with heavy hearts,
and honor they trod,
to pay their respects,
to give their salute,
and to ask for your mercy,
on heroes in Blue.
Amen.

Richard, rest easy brother, we have the watch.

You served this great country as a U.S. Marine, you successfully completed the toughest bootcamp in the world. You walked the streets and protected the citizens of your wonderful community and you faced dangers everyday with the fearless pride of the officer you became. You were then shown appreciation by being in the sights of a worthless coward whose only bravery was to run, just as he would if placed in the position of our Marines and Soldiers today. Thank you Officer May for the sacrifice that you gave and thank you to the family for the support that you gave Richard while he performed the duties of a Police Officer "a job that we officers all love". Semper Fi Marine, This Fire Watch is complete your family will always be taken care of in you remberance.

You bravery will never be forgotten. From you English colleagues.

The Policeman stood and faced his God,
which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining
just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, Policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church, have you been true?"

The Policeman squared his shoulders and
said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times, my talk was rough...
and sometimes, I've been violent
because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny
that wasn't mine to keep,
though I worked a lot of overtime
when the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
though at times, I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here,
Lord, it needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much.
But if you don't, I'll understand."

There was silence all around the throne where the saints often trod.
As the Policeman waited quietly
for the judgement of his God.

"Step forward now, Policeman.
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets.
You've done your time in hell."

Staffordshire Police, England
