I was driving down the freeway past the IKEA the other day, I'd been having a bad day and wanted to give you a call. I knew you would know exactly what to say to make me feel better and get my mind back on track. It is still so hard to believe that you are not there to answer the phone, but I know that you are still with us.
I pray for you everyday

To the family and friends of Officer Richard May and to his fellow officers of the East Palo Alto Police Department
I was so saddened to learn of the tragic death of this young dedicated officer. On behalf of our entire family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you sustained when Officer May was brutally murdered in the line of duty. His valor and bravery will never be forgotten, and his memory shall always be revered.
May you be comforted and supported by the warm embrace of your law enforcement family, and by other police survivors who share your painful journey.
My heart goes out to his young family. In reading the reflections about Richard, it is obvious that he profoundly touched the lives of many people and that he was an amazing husband, father, family member, friend and fellow officer. That is a wonderful legacy to leave to all those who cared for him. Semper Fi, Officer May.
My son Larry Lasater is his brother in green as well as blue. Larry was fatally shot during a foot pursuit of two bank robbers ten months ago. It comforts me to know those gung ho Marines and cops are angels at the Lord's table now and watch over us all just as they did on earth. Knowing that Heaven has another hero in your Richard doesn't mean however that I don't regret that he was taken from his loved ones.
I also pray that his family gets the full measure of justice that they deserve for this horrific, senseless crime.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the service Richard gave to his country as a Marine, and the many years of distinquished service he gave to his community and the citizens of California as a peace officer, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on January 7, 2006.

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is not only a reflection of the lives lost, but a reminder of what makes them heroes is how they lived, not how they died. Officer May was a Hero long before he was a police officer. He was a heroic Marine, he was a hero to his wifw and three daughters and he will forever be a hero to the 14 year-old explorer who rode with him on his last tour of duty. REST IN PEACE

Richard,
I believe it is fair to say that members of the public have no idea exactly what we do in our line of work, however we accept the risks involved and still choose to do the jobs that other would refuse to do, You gave the ultimate sacrifice and it makes me proud to say that I am a Police Officer to know that I can live upto the standards officers such as yourself have set,
My deepest sympathies top your family at this terrible time.

To the Family, Friends, and Co-Workers of Ofc. May-
Dear fellow Marine and brother in blue, reading your reflections, I see that there is a common ground for all of us- we are a Family, bound by the loss of special people. It will ALWAYS be this way, and we will ALWAYS outnumber the bad! We put fear aside, and charge on to the task at hand- for our family, friends, co-workers, and community- just like you... Bless you and yours, thank-you for your dedication. Semper Fi Marine.

The last time we posted on this page the suspect had not yet been apprehended. Congratulations and thank you to the brothers of Officer May. Dedication and training is what causes minute details to be captured as evdience rather than overlooked. While we know, the arrest does not bring him back, I know how much better my family and I felt when the suspect my brother-in-law was pursuing was brought to justice. We look forward to honoring Officer May in Washington.
