Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Ethan G. Collins

The Policeman stood and faced his God,
which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining
just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, Policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church, have you been true?"

The Policeman squared his shoulders and
said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times, my talk was rough...
and sometimes, I've been violent
because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny
that wasn't mine to keep,
though I worked a lot of overtime
when the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
though at times, I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here,
Lord, it needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much.
But if you don't, I'll understand."

There was silence all around the throne where the saints often trod.
As the Policeman waited quietly
for the judgement of his God.

"Step forward now, Policeman.
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets.
You've done your time in hell."

I am deeply saddened by the enourmous loss of Deputy Ethan Collins. The Bible tells us that "Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends" (John 15: 13) Ethan lost his life while responding to a distress call from a friend and fellow officer. I pray for the family and for their loss....and Kylie you know how much I love you. I am here for you.

Ethan,
I spent the last day trying to figure out what to say to you, after spending half of the night with your brothers and sisters at the Fairfield County Sheriffs Office. I learned a lot about I had heard of you but only in passing, when I heard there had been a Deputy killed in Fairfield I called TJ and didn’t get an answer and was scared then he called me and told me it was you. I was and still am in shock I meet with him at the Office and spent a long time there and no one had a dry eye. Thanks to the Licking County Sheriffs Office they sent down 4 Deputies to help run the county so that the Sheriff and the other deputies could be debriefed. As has been said many time you were responding to an "Officer Needs Help Call" and I fell that nothing was going to stop you from getting there to help out your fellow brother in trouble. To me you ARE A TRUE HERO.

To your wife, children and family I am so sorry for the pain you are suffering no words can describe how you feel just 13 short months ago I was feeling a simaler pain and all of the Deputies from The Fairfield County S.O. made that pain a little bit easer Know that they are all their for YOU and you are in our thoughts and prayers every night.

To my co-worker & friend, I will never forget all of the memories we had of working in the radio room before you became a road dog. I don't think anyone else has ever shredded "items" in the "binford" like you did. Our hearts go out to your family & may they know we are here for them for whatever they need night or day. It will be hard not to see you at work but I know you are watching over all of us. We will continue to go on with our lives and severe & protect the citizens of Fairfield County because as you know, that is what we do. You will always be in our hearts and we will miss you!! So long for now unit 268 until we meet again.

We are so sorry to here about your tragic loss of a loved one in law enforcement. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you in support. As we personally know, sometimes there is little comfort that comes from words. Keep focused as you can on the memories and joyous times for these things may bring you comfort. Rely heavily on family, friends, and other law enforcement. Honor your fallen loved one, for their sacrifice will not be forgotten.

My most heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and fellow officers of Deputy Collins. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Mrs. Collins, I lost my husband in the line of duty 9 months ago - I truly understand what you are going through. I also have two young children. Please believe that your wonderful husband is your guardian angel now; he will be with you always and will guide and protect you on this very painful journey you have just begun. Hold on tight to your little ones. Your heart won't always hurt the way it does right now - the pain does soften with time. I will pray for you, that you will have the courage and strength to get through this tragedy.

Deputy Collins, thank you for your service and sacrifice. God bless you, and may you rest in peace, Blue Angel.
