Ethan,
I'm sorry it took so long for me to leave a little memorial for you here. I still dont know what to say. As a dispatcher on second shift as soon as you picked up that mic and marked on duty I became your Lifeline. I feel Honored to have been giving that duty. I never verbally expressed it to you but you taught me alot about being a family man. I used to see you dropping your daughter off at school and I always could see the love you had for your family. No matter how crazy things were in this life you always put your family first. On January 4, 2006 you came to work like any other night you loaded your cruiser, marked on duty, and headed said you were going to go to main st jail to get your cruiser washed. I told you negative and to copy a unruly juvenile. You took the call without question and headed twds the location. Another officer got to the scene before you did and started having some problems with the juvenile and tried to mark over the air about it. However we were unable to hear him and you immediately stepped up your response in fear of the worst happening to a fellow officer. Little did you or anyone else know that you would soon be the one in trouble. I cant describe the feeling I got and still have the moment I got a 911 call saying one of our cruisers was in an accident. The siren on your cruiser was still going off in the background, I will never forget that sound. Unit 268 you will always have a place in my heart and everytime i sit down at the dispatch console and talk to your fellow coworkers on the radio I can still hear your voice but I continue on in honor of you.
Kylie,
I can not even fathom the loss you must be feeling right now and I have no words of comfort for you except that being the last person to speak with your husband I can assure you that his voice was filled with concern for his fellow officer and I am confident that if Ethan were still here he would again without hesitation step up his response for his fellow officer in trouble. Rest Assured that because of God's Love for us we will see ethan again because he is now patroling the streets of gold in heaven and he is making sure they are safe for the day we go to meet him there.
Unit 268 I have you S37 Sir.

As I sit here viewing Deputy collins' reflections, my heart breaks for each of you. I am so touched by the devoted love and appreciation reflected by those who knew and those who never got the chance to know such an incredible individual. May Deputy Collins' Brothers and Sisters in Blue be at peace ~ Kylie,Madison and Hayden, I do not know you, but I want you to know that myself and others are praying for you and your little ones. Hold them tight and let them embrace you as hard as they can...God bless you all!!!

Ethan was indeed a great man. Helping others is his type of thing. That is how i met Ethan. I needed help on my senior project, so i went to the Sheriff Office on west wheeling. That was where i met the deputy, who is well known as a hero. He gave me Sgt.Rice's phone number, and he had helped me get my project started. If it weren't for Ethan as well as the other deputies, i wouldn't have the great senior project. When i went to the funeral services on Monday, i wasn't sure what to think. I wasn't sure if i wanted to hold it together and be strong for everyone else, or if i wanted to express how i really felt. Sad and loss. I lost it. I couldn't bare looking at Kylie, and Madison. Madison, showed the grief on her face. As trooper Kurt Hedges shared his story about Ethan, it made me realized just how great Ethan really was. Kylie, i know i can't ease your pain, by telling you i'm sorry. i just wanted you to know how your husband helped me. If i were to describe your husband, i would agree with the word "hero". I pray for you everyday.

Ethan, I really enjoyed the conversations that we had during the years that I was privileged to know you at the SO. You had a gift of humoring others and that will always be remembered by those who knew you. As many people know, you lived by the golden rule and are respected by so many people because of that. Thank you Ethan for giving me an excellent role model to look up to from the beginning of my career to the times that we worked together on 2nd shift patrol. God bless you, Kylie, Madison, Hayden, and your whole family. You will be deeply missed by all of us who knew you and even those who didn't. I will do the best that I can to help your family if I am ever needed to do so. Unit 313 to unit 268...goodbye for now Brother. We will always remember you.

We answered the calls and collected the information just like any other time, until they said it was a deputy. As our hearts raced and we prayed "don't let it be". We kept calling the post to confirm it unable to beleive that you were gone. We've replayed it in our minds a thousand times, and cried together, and with your wife and children. There is nothing we can say or do to express the grief we feel at the office. Just know that we miss you, and we are here for your family. You are a true hero and will never be forgotten.
