Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Chief of Police William H. Callaway, Jr.

No passage of time can ever erase your service and sacrifice. Rest in peace always.

Detective Cpl/3 Steven Rizzo
Delaware State Police (Retired)

Years after Chief Callaway's murder, his grandson, Stuart Woods, who was born more than a decade after his grandfather's death, memorialized the incident by fictionalzing it in his first novel, CHIEFS. The character based on his father was the first of three generations of police chiefs in Delano, GA, (a fictionalized version of Manchester), who, over the course of more than 40 years, find themselves investigating the same crime.

To the best of my knowledge, this manner of honoring the death of a family member in law enforcement who was killed in the line of duty is unique.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 86th anniversary year of your death.

Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

Rest In Peace.

mom of fallen Pittsburg (CA) officer Larry Lasater
