This was my Great, Great Uncle. I'm baffled how the offender only received 4 months in prison. I see somebody posted below who may be a distant relative, If anybody has more information about the case and the Burk family I'd love to hear it, my email is [email protected]
Rest in Peace John D. Burk

Thank you for your service and for making Kaufman what it is today. If it wasn't for brave officers like this I wouldn't have a job like I do at the Kaufman County Sheriffs office. God bless!

Growing up I heard stories about Uncle John the Constable that was killed in the line of duty in Kaufman. Mom said your brother Sam, her grandfather, was heart broken. I began to put our family genealogy together and there you where, a real HERO. The newspaper clippings said that "A brother(Sam)of Burk secured the officer's pistol and attempted to shoot Scott as he made his escape through the crowd, but the pistol was wrested from him".
Your family grieved as the newspaper reported, " The closing scene of a sad tragedy that occurred in Kaufman Monday afternoon took place in Hill County today. The train arrived over the branch of the County Railroad at 8:00 yesterday evening brought to Hillsboro. The remains of John Burk, late of Crandall, Kaufman County and until his death, constable of the precinct in which he lived, who was killed in Kaufman at 4:00 P.M. Monday by M. B.Scott a realty agent. The remains of the dead man was accompanied by the surviving members of his family, his brothers, and other relatives, were place for the night in the county courtroom where a watch was over the members of the party until morning. While the ladies and those of the gentlemen not on guard were, thru the thoughtfulness attention of the Sheriff Jake Davis, was provided with beds in the court house and rested thru the night. This morning the body was conveyed to the Bell Springs Cemetery near Massy in the neighborhood of which he formally lived for about two years, for interment by the side of his wife who died when their home was in that vicinity. ..............The deceased was a Knight of Pythias in good standing."
Your family will not ever forget you, your story is recorded in the family book.

Constable Burke,
It has taken over 100 years, but you are finally being honored. I would like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for the citizens of Kaufman County. It is a travesty of justice that your murderer served little more than four years in prison.
