Reflections for Lake Ranger Glen M. Collins

To the Collins Family. Glen was a great friend. I enjoyed working with him on the evening and midnight shifts. I enjoyed his Airborne paratrooper stories, he was always good company to have in times of trouble. Take Care and God Bless. Ken Meisel (Shawnee PD. 1995 to 2001)

I've known Glenn since I was a young cub scout growing up in Shawnee during the sixties. I knew him as a young man going fishing at the twin lakes and visiting with Glenn and his wife when I would buy my license from them at their home/office hdqtrs. I knew him when I was older and had moved out to Shawnee Lake on Post Office Rd. I helped Glenn put out several grass fires started by careless campers. So as you can see Glenn was involved in relationships and helped many a person during his tour of duty. I know of many Shawnee area residents who will miss Glenn along with me because he was such an Icon there at the Shawnee Twin Lakes. I could go on and on about how he helped do for people for many years but it isn't necessary to do so on these pages because all who know him have many memories of a Lake Ranger named Glenn.

My fiancé, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in SE Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Glen did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Glen be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Lake Ranger Collin's family, friends, and co-workers are going through in losing him. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of loss until they've walked in our shoes. Please know that my thoughts are with you and that you are not alone in your "journey". Should you ever need anything please do not hesitate to contact me. (The Davis County Sheriff's Office will always know how to reach me or write jocelyne1974 at canada dot com)

As a fallen officer "survivor" and a friend, please accept my condolences on behalf of myself and the McElderry family. I never got the opportunity to know Glen but, I am certain he was well respected and well loved. Glen will live on in the hearts of all the lives he touched. You were all blessed to have been able to know and love Glen, even for a short time. I pray that Glen, Dennis, and all the other fallen officers will continue to watch over us all as only they can.

Thank you Lake Ranger Collins for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiancé Dennis for me.

Wishing you and all those who's lives you touched brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

For 35 years I have known this man. He was a friend to my mother and father since 1974. After my father's death, he helped my mother feel safe enough to continue to live and visit her favorite place at Lake Shawnee. His kindness exceeded most men and his love of people and nature as well. I shall miss this kind-hearted man because I loved and respected him. It will be difficult to drive by the Rangers Station and not see that familiar form walking past with a wave of his hand welcoming me and my family. Goodbye dear friend, rest well, know that you will be missed. Judy Balliett Henderson

THE POLICEMAN'S LAST ROLL CALL ...

THE POLICEMAN STOOD AND FACED HIS GOD, WHICH MUST ALWAYS COME TO PASS. HE
HOPED HIS SHOES WERE SHINING, JUST AS BRIGHTLY AS HIS BRASS. "STEP FORWARD
NOW, POLICEMAN. HOW SHALL I DEAL WITH YOU? HAVE YOU ALWAYS TURNED THE OTHER
CHEEK? TO MY CHURCH HAVE YOU BEEN TRUE?"

THE POLICEMAN SQUARED his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a Saint. I've had to
work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough, and sometimes I've been
violent because the streets are awfully tough. But I never took a penny that
wasn't mine to keep, though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills just
got to steep. And I never passed a cry for help, though times I shook with
fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept many unmanly tears. I know I
don't deserve a place among the people here, they never wanted me around
except to calm their fear. If you've a place for me Lord, it needn't be so
grand. I never expected or had too much, but if you don't, I'll understand."

There was silence all around the throne where the Saints had often trod. As
the policeman waited quietly, for the judgement of his God. "Step forward
now, policeman, you've borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on Heaven's
streets, you've done your time in hell."
