Reflections for Narcotics Investigator Brandon Douglas "Teddy" Breland

Brother, Friend, and Neighbor - It's like yesterday we were in the Academy. It's still hard to believe that your gone or should I say moved from one paradise to another. I told your mother that it was an honor to know you. Brother, believe me, it was an honor. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

to the normal person it would be impossible to explain why we would feel an attachment to your agency. i honestly cannot explain it either. its almost as strange as a florida sheriff's deputy responding to calls in the state of mississippi. its just that way. my service in wiggins will always be one of my favorite times in law enforcement. probably has a little to do with the guys that went out there with me. it was like a big campout with your friends that lasted a week or ten days. throw in a car chase, a foot chase and that sums it up. god be with your family, friends and the agency. we enjoyed our time there. we left florida seeking action. we thought we would be at ground zero or something. what we got was action, and a great community that needed us. i think to a man if given a choice to choose another assignment while in mississippi, we all would have still chose wiggins. i know my stomache loved that baptist church food. bet lots of the other guys all ate mre's. but wiggins took care of us. thanks.........till we meet again

You were on my mind today, thinking of when I first met you.I brought my squad to Wiggins to help out with the hurricane relief and how excited you were when you learned that we were a drug task force. You will always be in our minds and hearts. The letter the City of Wiggins sent to my guys hangs proudly in our office. A reminder of a happy time when we were able to help your community and the sad time when we returned to Wiggins and wished you God's speed.

September 12, 2006

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

It saddens us all to hear that a Brother has fallen. Noone truly understands the pain and sorrow that one can feel for one he has never met, except for a fellow officer. Go with God. You will be missed.

Hancock County Sheriff's Office

My brother it has been such a short time since you were taken from us in the blink of an eye. I traveled to Washington D.C. to Honor you and Odell during police week and the candels all burned bright. There is not one day that goes by that I don't think back on old times. There will never be anyone to replace the friendship we had. The watch is covered here, so rest in peace my friend. We will meet again!

To the family and friends of Investigator Brandon Breland and his fellow officers at Wiggins Police Dept.:

I was so saddened to learn of the tragic incident that took the life of this fine young officer. I know that everyone involved is hurting and in anquish. I pray that justice is served for this brutal murder.

In reading the reflections about Brandon, it is clear that he was loved and respected my many people whose lives he touched. That is a wonderful legacy to leave, especially at such a young age. To be 23 years old and to have served as a peace officer for five years is remarkable in itself.

May you all be comforted by your law enforcement family, and other police survivors. May God watch over and protect his loved ones.

To his parents, I also share that particular agony of losing your child. Even knowing how much my son accomplished in his adult life, he remains my baby. I know that is what I kept calling my son as I was by his side after he was mortally wounded.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the service Brandon Breland gave to his community and the citizens of Mississippi, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on November 27, 2005.

Lord,
He was yours to give,
and yours to call home,
please stand by his brothers,
so they don't feel alone,
dry the tears of his family,
so they clearly see:
that he gave his all,
so all could have peace.
Blessed are they,
the children of God,
with heavy hearts,
and honor they trod,
to pay their respects,
to give their salute,
and to ask for your mercy,
on heroes in Blue.

Teddy, rest easy brother, we have the watch.
