Reflections for Narcotics Investigator Brandon Douglas "Teddy" Breland

Its hard to beleive its almost four years since that night. You are missed.

Officer Steven Rodrick
Wiggins Police Department

I went to the site today and it was ironic that Jerry had posted. Last month we talked about you during an agency training day. I think back on our trip to Wiggins alot. Sometimes when I am riding around at work I begin to remember. I am still in awe that I was in Mississippi enforcing the law. I do not pass a Mississippi state tag that I dont look to see if it is from Stone county, and if I meet somone from there I ask "do you know where Wiggins is". I have been a deputy 23 years. I look around my agency at all the young faces and wonder if they will also develop memories of places like Wiggins and all that trips like that mean. I will never understand why good people have bad things happen to them. I will just take from what has happened and use it to survive and help others to survive. R2 is 10-07 in Florida waiting for the next trip.

Was cleaning out my office the other day and came across a letter the City of Wiggins had sent, thanking us for our help during the hurricane Katrina aftermath. It caused me to reflect back on the people we met during that short time and how a young up and coming police officer made an impression on this old time cop. I still remember how excited you where when you found out that we were a steet level narcotics unit, and how you told us that was what you hope to be one day, a narcotics officer. I remember returning to send you off and the converstions I had with your fellow officers. Good times and bad ones, God's speed Teddy, we think of you often.

My thoughts and prayers are with your loved ones and friends at the end of the third year of your EOW. Continue to keep watch over them and those still out on patrol watching over the Thin Blue Line. You will never be forgotten.

It's not fair that the person who killed you got two life sentences instead of death. How does one live two lives? It's not right in my book.
However, I know that where you are, you aren't worried with such things and I hope that at least is of some small comfort to your family.
Justice was not served as far as I'm concerned.
A million thank you's for your service will never be enough.
Thank you sir

I am glad that justice is finally served. I know it does not heel the pain but at least he did not walk away free. He will have a long time to set and think about what he did to both families. I am sorry for the lost of Brandon and his son. I could not image losing both in such a short time apart.

Brother Breland
I visited you in the funeral home and listened to others that knew you talked about what a great young man you were. Its no doubt that GOD used you to tend to his children. It was a GREAT loss that night to loose you in such a tragic event. My Heart goes out to your family and I will keep them in my prayers as you watch over them from heaven. I know your name is listed in Washington DC at the National Police Memorial but we also remembered you at The State F.O.P Memorial at the Jim Buck Ross Agriculture Museum in Jackson on May the 15th 2006.

Thanks to Lester Spell for giving us a spot just over the walkway from the sports museum. We remember all of the officers in the state each May with a noon service... We will remember you and Brandon again this year also. I hope that we can keep the walls bear but this year we will add Deputy Sheriff William John Walters

The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I dont think a hurricane season can go by that i will not think of Wiggins Mississippi. I hope that all the Wiggins officers are doing well. We will not give up the fight here to put the criminal element where they belong. That promise I make to you. Once again Wiggins, if you ever need us. we are only a phone call away. When I think back on that trip. Words cannot describe it. I never thought in a million years I would be travelling from Florida to fight crime in your state. I was proud to do it. Sounds corny but thanks for the memories. That was truly a high point in my career..........Pete

Brandon, I didn't know you, but I remember the day you died like it was yesterday.
I remember seeing it on television, and thinking how senseless your death was.
It has bothered me ever since.
I'm glad I found you on this site...It's a way I can pay my respects to a true hero.

Life without these officers will not be the same any time some one goes down in the line of duty the reflections pass over and over of just how dangerous it is to defend the public.Officers are important in securing the safety of the public but when they bring people in the jails that have committed this crime how can we treat them fairly? Out of respect for the officers and jailers a big thank you goes out to you. It is because of you that we can all sleep at night. God Bless the fallen and brandon was dear to our hearts I remember his first drug bust that thrill was overtaking him he loved every thing about his job. May our prayers be with your family as they face every day this tramatic event that took a precious man from his family.

Brother, Friend, and Neighbor - It's like yesterday we were in the Academy. It's still hard to believe that your gone or should I say moved from one paradise to another. I told your mother that it was an honor to know you. Brother, believe me, it was an honor. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.
