I looked all thru the reflections and I noticed I never left
you a message, although there are so many from all
over the U.S. I remember seeing your picture so I know I visited your site. Sometimes I am just too overcome
with grief to even know what to say. And that is the case
now. I don't understand why such a cruel and evil thing
had to happen to such a kind, wonderful and caring
human being. I long for the day when Jesus will return
for His own and take us to a place without sin of any kind. A place where there will be no more death, tears
or sorrow. A place where Jesus will rule and it will be
as He planned it before sin destroyed us. I hope that's
the place where you are and where I long to be. Until
then, may the Lord heal your broken hearts and spur
you on to greater acts of service in His name. I am truly
sorry for your unspeakable loss.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

So many of us in Woodland and Yolo County still ache for Andy, we drive down the County Road he was last alive on, we smile when we see the chippie's commercial truck on the road, we curse the 2 cowards when we drive past the county jail and those of us who live near that County Road feel weak when the sound of a helicopter flying over brings back nauseating, horrible memories of that cold afternoon in November.

Everyday we wear our metal bracelets engraved with Andy's name, EOW date and memorial location. There truly isn't a day that goes by that Andy isn't in our hearts, in our thoughts and in our prayers. We pray that God continues to give Michelle the strength she needs to go on through life without the amazing man that is her husband.

I wish you were still here today working for the CHP. I have recently just submitted my application to begin testing for the CHP and I just wanted to say that I think it is people like you that make this type of work so honorable. I have seen more professionalism in the CHP and other law enforcement agencies then I did in the military. I salute you and your sacrifice and pray that God be with and comfort your family until you all meet again.

In reading through some of the relfections left by your friends, it is very obvious that your are loved, respected and terribly missed. Some say "time heals wounds", but there has never been anything farther from the truth. Although a year has passed, it seems that now the numbness wears off and the true grieving begins. As your loved ones embark on this day, I hope it comforts them to know that they are not alone. Thoughts and prayers are being sent from far and wide...We may be seperated by miles, but we are bound by this Thin Blue Line and this unexplainable grief.

I salute you Officer Stevens. And I pray for your loved ones, both your immediate family and your police family.

Andy & Family,

I went to school with Andy at Carmichael Baptist, we were friends. I remember when you said "I am going to be a CHP Officer" we were kidds then ... I think I really tried to talk you out of it, however, you followed your heart. That heart of yours rates in the top 5 for me, you were a golden boy and I admired you then, and am Honored to have grown up with you. I took a oath as well, to defend this Nation against all enemy's foriegn and domestic. Our Oath's may have differed a little, however, we bacame our Oath, and you payed the ultimate sacrifice. We were destined to full fill God's plan. I want to tell you so much, that how deeply your passing from this life to the next affected me, I have grayed and age'd 30 years. I will never Forget your sacrifice, nor, will I ever find peace in this world till justice is served. Veterans day 2000 in Old Sac was the last time we saw eachother in this life and I remember just as a kidd how I looked up to you thinking then how awesome of a person you had become. My 83yr old GrandFather and I went to visit you on Christmas, I stood and saluted you in the peacefull place you rest. Thank You for your gallant service old friend, I Love you and everyday I think of you .. may you rest in peace till we meet again ..

I haven't previously left a reflection for Andy it just didn't feel right. I didn't know you that well but we covered each other on stops over the years. My most vivid memory was a pursuit that ended with a pit and everyone joking around afterwards, you had a good laugh.

Your parents dropped off a card and some cookies today and it brought back some rough memories of working the day you were taken from us. It's apparent that your memory lives on in your friends, family, and colleagues. It's for them that I tell this story.

In one of the previous reflections someone spoke of the memorial bands we wore commemorating you life and loss. I to wore one of your bands and several months after your passing I met a young girl, probably around 7 years old. She was attending her uncle’s graduation from the CHP academy. This kid was amazing smart, outgoing, and very proud of her uncle. She showed me a poster she made with her CHP uncle taking bad guys to jail.

She saw my bracelet and asked me what it was. I had no idea what to say and was momentarily at a loss for words. I then told her it was in memory of a man who did the job her uncle was about to embark on. I gave her the bracelet and asked her to give it to her uncle explaining that it would guide him and protect him in his future profession and that he would know what it meant.

I hope that your family knows that this is the legacy you have left. You paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect and serve the citizens of this community. You are not forgotten and your spirit will be carried on by all of us who pin on the badge, strap on the gun, and hit the streets every day.

Rest well you have earned it.

Andy,
I never had the chance to meet you, but I wear your blue bracelet "A.STEVENS 13739" everyday in honor of you and as a reminder of how fragile life is and how dangerous this job can be. Ike (my bro) gave it to me. Several of my LASD friends wear one also. 2 weeks ago I gave the one I've been wearing to one of your old buddies from Baldwin Park CHP - John Tapia, because he wanted it, and I had to get another one from Ike for myself. Andy, he's just as crazy as he ever was.
You probably know our other brother "Ike" (what's up with that?) is an LASD Deputy and now I will be a reserve deputy when I graduate next month as part of the Los Angeles County San Dimas Mountain Rescue Team. In our academy we are constantly reminded of all the bad guys out there and how a lot of them want to hurt us. I am so glad they caught him. You did not deserve to have your life and career end this way. Ike has told me what a great officer you were and what a great guy you were. I know it was really tough on him too - you were one of his boys. OK, MEN!
You are a hero and heroes live forever. The reflections I have read about you says it all. You were loved and admired by many. To Andy's family - I am so sorry for your loss. I hope your fond memories of Andy carry you through this difficult time and make you smile. To all the officers out there - be safe.

I had the distinct honor of meeting your brothers in DC for the National Memorial. What terrific people. I was moved by their kindness. I was moved by their love for you. I could understand it. I was there with my fellow friends honoring one of our brothers, Daniel Golden. It was amazing how the miles and the differences could seperate us, but the common thread of our love for you and Golden brought us together and made us as close as if we had known each other for years. It was amazing that you and Golden STILL effect us to this day in such a positive and powerful way. I consider myself blessed every day for having known Golden, I know consider myself blessed to having met the men who bear your name with such pride and love. Thank you.

We were in Washington DC last week to HONOR a good friend and fellow officer. While having dinner at the Dubliner, we had the GREAT pleasure of meeting some of your fellow "Chippies". What started out as playful banter back and forth turned into a night of fellowship and reflection that I will carry with me the rest of my life. As short as the night was, a bond was made with YOUR friends as we toasted and smoked cigars in your's and Daniel's memory and life.

As I spoke with Dana, it was immediately evident just how SPECIAL you were to ALL of your friends, especially the ones that were there to HONOR YOU! You are greatly missed everyday.

Many tears were shed as we all reflected and stories were shared. You will NEVER be forgotten by your family or friends. Rest Easy Brother
