Officer Stevens,
I would also, like many other people, like to thank you for your tremendous and true sacrifice. Unfortunately I know exactly what your family is going through. It's a true nightmare. But just know this that the lord chooses strong family's to go through these nightmares that we all have to go through and he does it because he will be with you through every second of it and know's that you are a strong family that will get through it.It does get easier but of course you will have those worst days and we all will be with you on those days.

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"

Although not a peace officer, when I watched the breaking news that day, tears rolled down my face. It infuriates me that someone who devoted himself to keeping people like me safe on a daily basis, had his life ended like this. The life of his family, his brothers and sisters in service changed forever by an idiot.
I thank him, his family and all those who go out every single day knowing that harm is just sitting there waiting for them. Words seem so puny, so ineffective, but as the tears fall from my eyes now, I thank you Officer Andy Stevens, thank you. And to his wife Michelle, my heart, thoughts and prayers are with you. Thank you also, for ultimately, this sacrafice was yours also.
