Our family extends to you, the family, friends and fellow LEO's of Officer Dickerson our deepest condolences. Our hearts and prayers are with you at this most difficult time. No words can help, as survivors we all know this. But keep in your hearts the fact that our love, prayers and strength are with you every step of your journey.
Never forget that your grief is carried by us all, because he is a hero, and did a job that not many are able to do and love.
I can promise you this, somehow, each day you will find the strength to wake up each morning and get through each day. I can also make this promise, one day, warm memories and even the ability to smile at his memory will make its way into your hearts and minds.
My favorite quote is on the National Law Enforcement Memorial Wall. "It is not how these officers died that made them heroes, it is how they lived".
God Bless you all.

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"

Well Courtney, what can I say we went to the academy together, worked toegther when I was with Danville PD, and most of all competed with one another in sports. I'll miss you brother, you taught me alot about life and people. You are in the hands of God now. You gave your life doing something that you consistently told me you loved doing. To all of you who don't know Courtney personally, I do. He was courageous, funny, energetic, and most of all well-liked by everyone he came in contact with. He would be willing to provide help to you at any moment's notice without hesitation. Courtney, you will be missed and I know brother I will see you again. Your legacy will live on.

My fiancé, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in SE Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Courtney did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Courtney be the last to die this way.
Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Dickerson's family, friends, and co-workers are going through in losing him. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of loss until they've walked in our shoes. Please know that my thoughts are with you and that you are not alone in your "journey". Should you ever need anything please do not hesitate to contact me. (The Davis County Sheriff's Office will always know how to reach me or write jocelyne1974 at canada dot com)
As a fallen officer "survivor" and a friend, please accept my condolences on behalf of myself and the McElderry family. I never got the opportunity to know Courtney but, I am certain he was well respected and well loved. Courtney will live on in the hearts of all the lives he touched. You were all blessed to have been able to know and love Courtney, even for a short time. I pray that Courtney, Dennis, and all the other fallen officers will continue to watch over us all as only they can.
Thank you Officer Dickerson for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiancé Dennis for me.
Wishing you and all those who's lives you touched brighter and better days,
Jocelyne :)
