Reflections for Sergeant Jonathan Paul Dragus
May God bless you, your family and your department during this very difficult time. Your service will never be forgotten.

I too saw Dragus only at the jail. Though I didn't know him personally, I do know that it seemed as if he never met a stranger and always treated me and any fellow officers as close friends. His quick wit and his personality made him a joy to be around. He definitely will be missed by all of us in this lifetime.

Jon, I have carried this poem with me every day since the funeral of our fellow officer Jeff Rominger E.O.W. 8/31/00...
When God made Peace Officers....
When the Lord was creating peace officers, he was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, "You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one."
And the Lord said,
"Have you read the spec on this order?
A peace officer has to be able to run five miles through alleys in the dark, scale walls, enter homes the health inspector wouldn't touch, and not wrinkle his uniform."
"He has to be able to sit in an undercover car all day on a stakeout, cover a homicide scene that night, canvas the neighborhood for witnesses, and testify in court the next day."
"He has to be in top physical condition at all times, running on black coffee and half eatin. And he has to have six pairs of hands."
The angel shook her head slowly and said, "Six pairs of hands... no way."
"It's not the hands that are causing me problems," said the Lord, "it's the three pairs of eyes an officer has to have."
"That's on the standard model?" asked the angel. The Lord nodded. One pair that sees through a bulge in a pocket before he asks, "May I see what's in there, sir?" (When he already knows and wishes he'd taken that accounting job.) "Another pair here in the side of his head for his partners' safety. And another pair of eyes here in front that can look reassuringly at a bleeding victim and say, You'll be all right ma'am, when he knows it isn't so."
"Lord," said the angel, touching his sleeve, "rest and work on this tomorrow." "I can't," said the Lord, "I already have a model that can talk a 250 pound drunk into a patrol car without incident and feed his family on a civil service paycheck."
The angel circled the model of the peace officer very slowly, "Can it think?" she asked. "You bet," said the Lord. "It can tell you the elements of a hundred crimes; recite Miranda warnings in its sleep; detain, investigate, search, and arrest a gang member on the street in less time than it takes five learned judges to debate the legality of the stop... and still it keeps it sense of humor. This officer also has phenomenal personal control. He can deal with crime scenes painted in hell, coax a confession from a child abuser, comfort a murder victim's family, and then read in the daily paper how law enforcement isn't sensitive to the rights of criminal suspects."
Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the peace officer. "There's a leak," she pronounced. "I told you that you were trying to put too much into this model."
"That's not a leak," said the Lord, "it's a tear."
"Whats the tear for?" asked the angel.
"It's for bottled-up emotions, for fallen comrades, for commitment to that funny piece of cloth called the American flag, for justice."
"You're a genius," said the angel.
The Lord looked somber.
"I didn't put it there," he said.

I visit this page now and then to quietly pay my respects to fallen overseas brothers and sisters, praying that there are no further memorials, but realising this is a book with no end.
Our Department lost a brother in similar fashion several years ago - the risk however being very real and very present every time we leave the Station.
My sincere thoughts, respects and prayers are with Sgt Dragus' family, friends and co-workers and all other members of our world wide tribe in blue.
Go with God now Brother. Be in Peace.

It is never easy to say farewell to a colleague. I spent three weeks in OK city following the cowardly attack on the Alfred P. Murrah Building in 1995, and met many of the professional from the OK City PD, who made me feel like I was a part of them, a colleague, and a friend...it is with these memories that I offer 'Farewell Sgt Dragus..Rest in Peace in the Arms of God'

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.
Today, October 21, 2005 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Sergeant Jonathan Dragus who died in the line of duty just yesterday.
When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.
Sgt. Dragus' sacrifice will never be forgotten.

I NEVER DREAMED IT WOULD BE ME,
MY NAME FOR ALL ETERNITY.
RECORDED HERE AT THIS HALLOWED PLACE,
ALAS MY NAME, NO MORE MY FACE.
"IN THE LINE OF DUTY" I HEAR THEM SAY,
MY FAMILY NOW HAS THE PRICE TO PAY.
MY FOLDED FLAG STAINED WITH TEARS,
WE ONLY HAD THOSE FEW SHORT YEARS.
THE BADGE NO LONGER ON MY CHEST,
I SLEEP NOW IN ETERNAL REST.
MY SWORD I PASS TO THOSE BEHIND,
AND PRAY THEY KEEP THIS IN MIND.
I NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD BE ME,
AND WITH HEAVY HEART ON BENDED KNEE,
I ASK FOR ALL THOSE HERE FROM THE PAST,
PLEASE GOD, "LET MY NAME BE THE LAST!"
Rest in peace. You'll be missed

To the family of Sgt. Dragus and OCPD, the officers of Yukon mourn your loss of a wounderful husband, father and officer. Sgt. Dragus was more than a police officer he was a servant, God's servant. He has touched many lives over the years. His love for his family and career shine though him. Just remember that Jonathan loved us all. "No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13).

"We Remember the Officers"
We remember the officers who changed our lives,
The men and woman who protected us day and night,
People who respect for their dedication to the cause,
For when faced with danger, they never even pause.
We remember the officers who always stood true,
Whatever the color of uniform, brown gray or blue,
With pride and integrity they say "To serve and protect",
For the giving of their life, we offer our respect.
We remember the officers who we never really knew,
Persons strong enough to answer the challenge are few,
With heavy hearts we mourn the officers in eternal rest,
There's more to these people than the badge on their chest.

"If tomorrow starts without me,
An I'm not there to see,
If the sun should rise and find your eyes
all fille with tears for me;
I wish so much you wouldn't cry
the way you did today
While thinking of the many things,
We didn't get to say.
I know how much you love me,
As much as I love you,
And each time that you think of me,
I know you'll miss me too.
My thoughts and prayers are for Sergeant Dragus' family, friends, and
those he left behind.
Some pay the ultimate sacrifice and we never know why but we pray God will be
with you and comfort you.
