Reflections for Sergeant Jonathan Paul Dragus

Again we mourn as another hero is taken from us. My deepest sympathy to the family, friends and co-workers of Police Officer Dragus. May the Lord give you strength and bless each of you during this time.

Rest in peace for your watch here is over; walk in heavens beat and guide us to protect and serve others safely.

Michelle, you and your whole family will be in my thoughts and prayers from now on. This is a terrible thing that we have to share, just know that you are not alone in how you feel. These men are true the definition of the word HERO.

While I never had the opportunity to meet Jonathan, it sounds like he was a wonderful person and had a very close relationship with God. While I know he is in a better place I am sad that he did not have more time with his wife and children. My heart goes out to them. I pray for them daily that God will wrap his arms around them and comfort them.

Though I never met Jon, I do know how much Jon was and is loved. It is through the many stories of his warmth and caring, his strength and devotion to all of his family from his loving and adoring sister Michelle and brother (in-law) Shawn, that I learned what a remarkably fine wonderful man Jon was. I know your family and friends will treasure every one of the memories they have of you forever and ever and always. My heart breaks for all those who love you.

God sent Sergeant Dragus as a soldier of Heaven to protect us all. He did not fear this mission as many of us would. God must have realized that his bravest soldiers were needed in Heaven.

Kelly, no words can express what you are going through. Every officer's wife has nightmares about your reality. I am very sorry for the loss of Jonathan, your best friend. Try and find strength in all of the wonderful memories that you shared with Jonathan. Remember that during your times of sorrow, the one you love will always be in your heart and the hearts of your children.

I told you I wouldn't leave.
My memories, my thoughts are imbedded deep in your heart.
I still love you.
Do not for one moment think that you have been abandoned.
I am in the Light.
In the corner, in the hall, the car, the yard ~
these are the places I stay with you.
My spirit rises every time you pray for me,
but my energy comes closer to you.
Love does not diminish; it grows stronger.
I am the feather that finds you in the yard,
the dimmed light that grows brighter in your mind,
I place our memories for you to see.
We lived in our special way,
a way that now has its focus changed.
I still crave your understanding
and long for the many words of prayer
and good fortune for my soul.
I am in the Light.

Sergeant Dragus thank you for your contribution to society in combating crime and keeping criminals off the streets. During the time I was a Cadet Explorer with the Independence Police Department here in Oregon, I gained a great deal of respect for police officers such as yourself. Seeing many aspects of the job, such as helping and being greatly involved in the community make officers like you the greatest members of society due to you and your brothers in blue being the protecters of individuals such as myself. Rest in peace Sergeant, and God bless your family. Go patrol the streets of heaven.

I had the pleasure of knowing Jonathan because of his love for Kelly.

Kelly - you know that I consider you my sister and I couldn't love you more even if we were related by blood. It was an honor to be your matron of honor and stand by your side as your married your best friend and soul mate. Looking at the two of you together on that day you could see how much you loved each other. Every time I saw the two of you together you could see that your love had only grown more. You have a daily reminder of that love in Kaden and as he grows you will see pieces of Jonathan in him from his smile and laugh, to his sense of humor, and his love for God and family. He will grow up knowing what a wonderful man his father was and how much he loved you all. I know that your time with Jonathan went by in the blink of an eye and even though it won't help you miss him any less, know that he will be with you always and you will see him again someday.
I love you.
Erin

Love is stronger than death.
So, I must be content to know that
love is not affected by death-
it doesn’t end, it doesn’t diminish,
it doesn’t change.
Instead, love is immortalized
and eternalized through death.
And the possibility of that love ever
being damaged or broken
is eliminated forever.
I'll put my trust in love.

TO SERVE AND PROTECT.

Lord we ask for courage.
Courage to face and conquer our own fears.
Courage to take us where others will not go.
We ask for strength.
Strenght of body to protect others.
Strength of spirit to lead others.
We ask for dedication.
Dedication to do our job and do it well.
Dedication to our community to keep it safe.
Give us lord concern, for all those who trust in us and compassion for those who need us.
AND PLEASE LORD THROUGH IT ALL BE ON OUR SIDE.
Kelly, Our time in the academy together brought us close. I know what your about and what you stand for. I have the deepest respect for you because of this. Sarah and I are now and will always be here for you.
Those of us that "go hard" wouldnt go any other way. I know you understand this. I know Jon was doing what he loved. I also know that the only thing Jon would have changed about that night was the pain that it caused his family and friends.
Like many of us Jon had very little regard for his own safety when it came to the safety of one of his brothers in blue or the citizens of Oklahoma City. For this I will always have the deepest respect for him.
Jon might not be with us physically but I know that he will now be watching over us in those times when we put our own safety last.

Oh Jon, you just don't how much someone impacted your life until they are gone. My mind wanders every morning as I drive east bound on NW Expressway past Penn Square Mall. I try to trick myself and tell myself that I will bump into you around town.

You have so many friends that loved you. I spoke with many of them on the phone that were unable to come home. They all send their love to your family and grieve for you. We are gathering as much information and pictures of you for the alumni website. Those that were unable to come home, are using the Internet to see as much information as possible. There are some of our old friends that we were unable to reach, and for those who were unable to say goodbye, we are adding an area for them to reflect too.

I miss you and I hope to be half the man you were. Your life is an inspiration to us all. Rest in peace my friend.

In loving memory of Sgt. Jon Dragus:
It is very heartwarming to read all these wonderful reflections about a
truly honorable gentleman who had a huge heart. According to
your closest associates, you are with Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
There is none greater than He. We don't get to Heaven based on what we do, but by His sacrifice on the
cross for our sins. AMEN! And even Jon, as wonderful as he was, is still
a sinner in God's eyes in need of a Savior. Thank you, Jon, for your fine
example to those that worked with you and knew you. There is now a
huge void that cannot be filled, but as you are remembered, thoughts will
turn to your exemplary life and we will be filled with pride, respect and
love for the man you became. You were a wonderful testimony to the Lord you served. God be with all those who mourn and may His promises lift all those with heavy hearts for many years to come. I wish I could erase your pain, but Jesus has done that for Jon. God bless his family, friends and co-workers who will miss him
forever.

I still feel like everytime I wake I am in the middle of a nightmare. Ashlyn and I miss you more than words can say. We have been friends since we were teenagers and I am so blessed and thankful to have so many wonderful memories of you. While I am so comforted knowing that you are in Heaven right now with all of your grandparents, I am also heartbroken for the days that lie ahead. You were supposed to be here today to take Ash trick or treating. It is so unfair that you will not be here for her first date, her prom, her softball and volleyball games, the holidays, her turning 16, her graduation, her wedding....I know that you will be looking down from Heaven with so much pride as she continues to mature. She may look like me...but her mannerisms, her humor, her attitude is all you. Some of the things that she does used to drive me crazy ...how pokey she is getting ready because she is tuned into the tv...just like YOU! But now I value that and I thank God that she has so many of your good qualities. I have been so blessed by so many of our friends telling me what a great witness you were to them and how because of you they have their name's written in the Lamb's Book of Life. I will continue to tell Ashlyn of all of the stories about her dad...the funny ones that brought me to tears, the ones of honor and courage, the ones of how proud you were of her. I thank God for letting us have you in our lives for so many years. Your memory will live on in Ashlyn and Kaden and we will never forget what a truly wonderful man you were. Kelly- you know that Ashlyn and I will always be here for you and Kaden for whatever you may need. My prayers are with you daily.

I am truly amazed and proud of the life Jonathan Dragus lived. Although I did not have the pleasure of knowing Sgt. Dragus, I can tell by the consistency of what has been written, his priorities were straight. So many people lose sight of what really matters in life. The hurried, fast paced, materialistic, committed to work and everything else but not to spouses or children world has taken the place of why we are really here. We are here because our Creator placed us here. We are here to love. We are here to shine God's light on others. We are here to encourage, uplift, and to give hope to others who may be hurting. Most importantly, we are here to tell others about Jesus Christ and to do our best to live according to God's Word and His will for our life. I am so thankful for Sgt. Dragus and the life he lived while here on this earth. He understood the importance of having a personal relationship with Jesus. He understood the importance of sharing his faith. He understood the importance of showing love to his precious wife and children, his mom, dad, siblings, other family members, friends, and co-workers. You all have said he was always smiling and making you laugh, so he also understood the importance of encouraging, uplifting, and giving hope in hopeless situations. That was God's light shining through him. Kelly, be proud. God is. Cry because you miss him, smile because you will see him again. What an amazing husband you had! I pray and hope that all that read this reflection and every other reflection written about Sgt. Dragus will take the time to "reflect" about your own life and get your priorities straight, for God, for your wife or husband, for your children. It sounds to me like he wasn't just an ordinary man, he was extra-ordinary! OCPD and families of OCPD need more men like him. The world needs more men like him. He set the example! Kelly, I am praying for you and your family. Rely on God's strength, peace, and comfort to get you through this difficult time. He will carry you through.
With Love, Kristi

This day 10/20/05 something occurred that none of us as wive's of officers like to even entertain in our minds for one second. A man, husband, father, and officer was taken while doing what he obviously LOVED greatly. I am a wife of an OCPD officer of 5 years and I can't even begin to say I understand the pain you are feeling Kelly. I am positive of one thing though, and even more confirmed by reading these reflections, Jon died while doing what he truly loved and had passion for. I understand this love and passion because I see it in my husband everyday and I also saw it in Kelly when her and my husband went through their academy together. I have not seen or kept up with Kelly, but I knew her well enough to know she is an outstanding person with more courage than I can imagine.

Kelly, I have deep respect for you and want to remind you of just how strong you truly are. I met Jon once before you two were married and I remember thinking you guys made a beautiful couple!!!! I know there is really nothing that can be said, but I just wanted you to know that I have thought of you often since this day and what you must be dealing with at this time. There is a deep respect and honor to have met Jon and to know you through Billy.

God speed this time for you and your family.

How in the world do I even begin to describe the compassion that I feel Sgt. Dragus' wife and family. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and yours. Each and every shift I pray for my husband and others that they do their job the very best that they can and that they all walk through that door, safe in their families arms again. I know the care, love, fear, concerns that come with those worries and the love behind those feelings. - Know that you are in my thoughts, love, and prayers.

God be with the family and police community. It is a hard thing to go through, we just lost one of our men in blue the beginning of the month and it is something you never want to hear or think about. God be with his wife, children, mother father, siblings and all. Be with those dispatcher working that day and his co-workers. That is something I dont wish for anyone to have to go through.
