Reflections for Police Officer Robin G. Vogel
My fiancé, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in SE Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Robin did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Robin be the last to die this way.
Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Vogel's family, friends, and co-workers are going through in losing her. My heart goes out to you all. No one can truly understand the pain of loss until they've walked in our shoes. Please know that my thoughts are with you and that you are not alone in your "journey". Should you ever need anything please do not hesitate to contact me. (The Davis County Sheriff's Office and COPS will also always know how to reach me.)
As a fallen officer "survivor" and a friend, please accept my condolences on behalf of myself and the McElderry family. I never got the opportunity to know Robin but, I am certain she was well respected and well loved. Robin will live on in the hearts of all the lives she touched. You were all blessed to have been able to know and love Robin, even for a short time. I pray that Robin, Dennis, and all the other fallen officers will continue to watch over us all as only they can.
Thank you Officer Vogel for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiancé Dennis for me.
Wishing you and all those who loved you brighter and better days,
Jocelyne :)

To Officer Vogel's family: I am very sorry for the loss you have suffered. Robin was an aquaintance of mine and I have always looked up to her. I have done a few ride-a-longs with the Decatur Police Department and there were a few times when she would back up the officer I was with. I always thought it would be so cool to ride with her and to just get some advice from her. I plan on becoming a patrol officer someday and I have thought it would be awsome to be as good at my job as she was at hers. God Bless, and my prayers are with you.

I was fortunate to be considered one of Robin's friends. She was a wonderful person and an incredibly dedicated police officer. I miss you terribly but am comforted to know that we have a guardian angel watching over us. Rest in peace dear friend. You will never be forgotten...just dearly missed.

Officer Vogel,
Unfortunately your family & I will always share something even though we don't know each other. Grieving on October 3rd every year. My first husband also died on that day...in the line of duty. I will keep your family in my prayers. It's a difficult road to walk and at times is a very lonely walk. God bless them - especially your child.

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
May the rain fall gently upon your fields. Until we meet again;
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.
My prayers are with you and your loved ones. Rest in Peace.

I knew Robin since high school when she moved to our area with her family from the Chicago area. She had that big city accent, cool clothes, and was so outgoing right from the start. It was easy for her to make friends. As a shy person, I was drawn to her. Her mother and mine knew each other, and introduced us outside of school. There was never a dull moment with Robin! We became fast freinds. When I learned of her passing, so many memories and good times came flooding back. Too many to list, but I remember being obsessed with music with her as teens. We loved Duran Duran, and watching Friday Nite Videos before MTV came around. Many nights were spent with her family, sharing meals and laughter. Such wonderful people. Later as we grew older, she was the Maid of Honor at my wedding. We were there for each other through life's milestones, such as graduation and having children. We were both born on the same day in 1968. Even though we didn't get to see each other as we wanted to lately, we always remembered to send cards for our birthdays to each other and emailed back and forth. She worked nights and weekends, and I work days, so we didn't get much time to spend together. But when we did, it was like we picked up right where we left off. We even found time to go on a canoe trip once, and had a blast! She was extremely driven in her quest to become a police officer. I remember coming to visit her at work in Springfield when she was a dispacter, and I ended up getting lost. She had the police out looking for me! LOL! She was so proud when she was accepted into the police academy, and so was I. I remember visiting her, and as I was going to bed in the guest room, she was putting her uniform on and going to work. I was awestruck. She loved her job. It wasn't just a job to her. It was her life, besides the most important thing to her...her son. She was a beautiful person, inside and out. Independent, loving, thoughtful and giving, and she had a wicked sense of humor. I'll miss her so much; especially her laughter. To her parents, Bob and Marilyn and her sisters, Suzie and Cheryl, Mike....and mostly to her son, Alex, please know how many lives she touched in her short time here on Earth. In reading all these words of comfort from other people, I hope it is of some comfort to you. I never knew just how much she contributed as a police officer in Decatur, and how many lives she touched, until reading all these memorials. Robin wasn't the type to brag about anything, so it's understandable how there was a lot I didn't know. With much love and sympathy to her family,
Tam

If you are able, save for them a place inside of you and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go, Be not ashamed to say you loved them, though you may or may not have always, Take what they have left and what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own, And in time when men decide and feel safe to call the streets insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind. We will se you in Elysium..
