i don't know really what to say but i want to think everybody that has wrote to us about my dad. My dad loved his job and i know he died of what he loved to do. And i can say he always protected the people. Right now i don't understand why God took him from me and my mom and my little brother but i guess that God needed a hero as an angel. the night that my dad died my birthday was that next friday i turned 16 so it's really hard for me right now but like i said i don't understand why God took him away from us but i know he is in a really special place. i get that now. well thank everybody that wrote about him. we miss him very much and i want never forget him. Rest in Peace dad. i love you!!!

My fiancé, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in SE Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Johnnie did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Johnnie be the last to die this way.
Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Shaner's family, friends, and co-workers are going through in losing him. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. Please know that my thoughts are with you and that you are not alone in your "journey". Should you ever need anything please do not hesitate to contact me. (The Davis County Sheriff's Office and COPS will also always know how to reach me.)
As a fallen officer "survivor" and a friend, please accept my condolences on behalf of myself and the McElderry family. I never got the opportunity to know Johnnie but, I am certain he was well respected and well loved. Johnnie will live on in the hearts of all the lives he touched. You were all blessed to have been able to know and love Johnnie, even for a short time. I pray that Johnnie and Dennis will continue to watch over us along with all the other fallen officers all as only they can.
Thank you Officer Shaner for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiancé Dennis for me.
Wishing you and all those who loved you brighter and better days,
Jocelyne :)

John Shaner is one of the finest people I have ever known and one of only a couple people in this world that I could consider a TRUE FRIEND. I met John about 15 years ago when his brother Chuck introduced us and have shared many memories with him since that time. John was a good hearted man who would give you the last shirt off of his back and ask if you needed another. John was also a character who was full of life and fun to be around, because he never took life too serious. John was the kind of guy who would put a few stray holes(The big .45 Calibre kind), in your target if he felt you were taking that little shot group of your's too serious. John was also one of the finest shooters I have had the pleasure to shoot with. John and I have spent countless hours in the woods hunting deer and turkey together. A critter was never safe with us around. I owe many successful hunts to Johnnie. We spent the day together last month with our sons fishing and picking at each other. I have reflected on many fond memories since I learned of the sad news that my friend was gone. These memories of times shared with a good and true friend are the ones I will keep in my heart forever. Rest in peace my brother. I look forward to the day when we can patrol the streets of heaven together. I am forever grateful for the times we spent together but will miss you until then. I promise to put in a few extra days in the woods for you.

Officer Johnny Shaner was my brother in law for 24 years. I have 4 other brother in laws that at one time or currently is some type of law enforcement. It is a very respected career for my family. Johnny was a very special person to everyone that knew him. I was in a small community and was very well liked, he would help anyone that had any type of need no matter waht it was. Most law enforcement officers are this way. I want to say thank you for this website in honor of these couragious men and women. It is wonderful to know that people from all over the world still honor this profession. I would just like to say THANK YOU from our entire family for adding Police Officer Johnny L. Shaner to this site for rememberance. I wish he did not have to die to be added. He was doing what he loved and would not have had it any other way. Johnny Lane Shaner you will be missed tremendously. As all other fellow officers. We all need to pray and honor these wonderful people for their contribution to society. We love you Johnny.

Our heartfelt condolence and love go out to John's wife and children as well as his family. John was a good friend and dedicated police officer. He left an imprint on the heart of anyone who knew him as he was a kind and giving man. He dedicated his life protecting others. Now he is in a much better place but will be greatly missed. Until we meet again, we love you John. No more pain and sorrow. God will take care of you now.
May his family find comfort in knowing that they will see him again and know that the love and prayers of all are with them.

I offer my sincere condolences to the wife and children of Officer Shaner. It is never easy to understand the whys of lives lost while still in their prime, but with the grace of God perhaps in time you will find the strength needed to continue on with the hope of someday being reunited again. I will pray that you may cope with your grief at this sad time and may God's perpetual light shine upon Officer Shaner and may he rest in His eternal peace as he watches over his family from a far better place.
