"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I can't help but think of my father every time I see an
Patrol car or Police Officer. They put their lives in God's
Hands each day. They answer every call without a moment of
hestitants.Their badges shine with pride.I can hear him
saying "Guilty by association, So...Becareful" It's been
two years since you answered your final call, I know in my
heart that you were standing by heaven's gate with open arms for Lil'John and telling St. Peter this is my boy.
Lil'John was also killed in a car accident on Friday,
June 30,2006. He was only 35,and the spitting image of Daddy. Amanda and I have our memories of Daddy And Lil'
John. No more alligators,or paper sacks full of surprises.
Like green snakes, Frogs, Or other critters they could find. Love never dies and memories are past down forever.
May God Bless...The police Officer For they all are Angels
here on earth and in heaven.

This poem is in memory of our father. Our loss can not be put into words.Due to the loss of Lil'John SHANER JR. In less than one year .

John's Golden Hour"
John's golden hour passed as his angel sat and watched. Then with his last breath the Angel woke him up. John you need to come with me. Our father in Heaven is waiting for you."No! I have call to answer first" The angel said "Yes, you do,But it's not here . John Our father is waiting. Then John heard his father call his name, and knew he must leave this life, As he stood up his uniform all tatter and torn. He notice that his badge looked as if it was brand new. The angel smiled at him and said "John You have wore it on your heart for all these years." You answered each call without hesitance. John said yes I did. As John looked back for a moment he replied "Please tell them all
"NO REGRETS OVER AND OVER AGAIN UNTIL THEY UNDERSTAND,FOR THERE IS NO ONE TO BLAME THE GOOD LORD CALLED MY NAME AND I
ANSWERED MY FINAL CALL"

We are so sorry to here about your tragic loss of a loved one in law enforcement. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you in support. As we personally know, sometimes there is little comfort that comes from words. Keep focused as you can on the memories and joyous times for these things may bring you comfort. Rely heavily on family, friends, and other law enforcement. Honor your fallen loved one, for their sacrifice will not be forgotten.
