Reflections for Trooper Donald Kevin Floyd
It’s been almost a year that you left this world. I’ll never forget the day I got the call from Al saying you had been hit by a car. All I could think about was getting to the hospital and seeing you laying there giving the nurses a hard time. But then I got the call from Womack, the call I never want to hear again saying you didn’t make it. I didn’t know what to say. All I could think about then was Cheryl, and the kids... How were they going to make it with out you? It’s been tough on your family, but they are STRONG people.
Kevin I miss our talks, and the time we would spend together. I find my self wanting to pick up the phone and give you a call to unload some problems on your shoulder or just to sit back and B.S. Kevin in the short time that we knew each other I consider you the brother I never had. I wanted to put something on this message board for so long but words can not explain what you mean to me. The people that knows me, knows what you mean to me.
Clayton still asks from time to time when I’m going to take him up to see Kevin so he can jump on that jumping thing and swim in the pool. I try to tell him your not there, but he well come back and say “it’s still Kevin’s house” and he is right, it’s still Kevin and Cheryl’s house.
Kevin you are MISSED by many down here, please keep a watchful eye out for us, and keep your brothers in blue safe.
Your friend

Kevin people call you a hero and that you are but I call you my husband, my best friend, you are the love of my life I miss you and I alway will. I keep thinking I will wake up from this nightmare but I know that will never happen. I miss running my fingers through your grey hair that beautiful smile and your laugh. I know I will see you again when the time is right and I know you are always with us, I love you babe

Some things are sadly left unsaid on this Earth, but I know Kevin will hear it now. Kevin is my cousin, and will be missed, not only by me, but by hundreds of family members and friends. I want to thank all the members of the MSHP, and other law enforcement brothers and sisters, that helped make sure that he was ushered to patrol the streets in Heaven with the respect that he so richly deserved.
Kevin might not have known this, but he was a mentor to me and the sole motivation for the career path I took in my life. My heart filled with pride when I heard friends and officers talk about him with such respect. Although I chose a different field of law enforcement, I strive to conduct myself professionally as he did with hopes of earning my colleagues respect - and if I acheive that, even half as much as Kevin did, I will consider myself a success.
Kevin, as well as many of his brothers and sisters in blue, left this Earth too soon. On behalf of the Floyd family, I want to say THANK YOU to all you for your thoughts and prayers. I would also like to say THANK YOU for your service.
God Bless, and be safe out there.

....Although the death of Kevin Floyd hit the closest to home, my heart still mourns the deaths of Graham, Tatoian, Sampietro, and all of the officers killed in the line of duty. My heart goes out to all of your families and friends. May God bless you all.

On March 20th ,2005 Dwayne Graham of the MSHP was murdered in cold blood, only a month later Ralph Tatoian died in a traffic accident. Then once again we heard the news on August 17th of Jay Sampietro. When I heard that I thought....what if it's a viscious cycle? What if just like earlier this year, another month goes by, and we hear this terrible news again? I never thought that would really happen, and forgot all about the thought. Never in my wildest dreams did I think it would be Kevin. The last time I saw him I only said "hi." The last time I talked to him before that he talked about his son, and his daughter. There was so much pride in his voice when he talked about them, and as always he was smiling. In fact every memory I have him, he was smiling. Kevin, we all miss you, and love you. We will never forget you.

We are so sorry to here about your tragic loss of a loved one in law enforcement. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you in support. As we personally know, sometimes there is little comfort that comes from words. Keep focused as you can on the memories and joyous times for these things may bring you comfort. Rely heavily on family, friends, and other law enforcement. Honor your fallen loved one, for their sacrifice will not be forgotten.

Why did you have to leave so soon?
I had just talked to you earlier that afternoon.
We were laughing and carrying on had I only known.
Had I known how the afternoon was going to end all wrong.
It hasn’t been the same since you’ve been gone.
I heard the call and I was on the way,
I’ll never forget finding you that day.
It ripped my heart to see you injured like that.
I did for you what you could not do filling your lungs with each breath,
while others did the rest.
I stayed with you till you were flown from the scene
hoping to wake and find it all to be a dream.
It was extremely hard to face the fact,
you were gone and never coming back.
You were a great cop and a good friend,
but why did it all have to suddenly end.
So tragically taken from this world
your friends, family and wife.
You paid the ultimate price
and they all represent the supreme sacrifice.
You served mankind well and did
a thankless job that few would choose to do.
Knowing what the consequences could bring,
you accepted the task without hesitation,
giving your life for our preservation.
You were laid to rest with Honors
in such a glorious way we will never forget.
Bugles playing, drums tapping and
bagpipes piping as the twenty-one gun
salute echoed in the air while we stood at attention.
Now I wake to another dawn
wondering why it had to go wrong.
Thoughts of you will always remain,
but things are not the same------
since you went 10-42

I was visiting family members in Ft. Leonard Wood, MO at the time of Trooper Floyds death. I was deeply saddened to hear that he was the 4th Tropper to die the line of duty in Missouri this year. My heart hurt greatly to hear such sad news. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Trooper Floyd as well as the entire Missouri State Highway Patrol as I cannot imagine how much you all must be hurting. Stay safe and God Bless all of you!

When I was looking through a magazine I found a poem that described everything perfectly. I wanted to share it with everyone.
The Broken Chain
We little knew that morning, that God
Was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you,
You did not go alone
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.
You left us peaceful memories.
Your love is still our guide.
And though we cannot see you,
You are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken,
And nothing seems the same.
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.
This poem made me feel a little bit better and I hope that it makes anyone feel better who is going through such a devastating time such as mine.

I cannot believe I am signing yet another reflection for an officer so close to home. When does this end? When does the careless motorist on the highway realize what they are doing to us and our families? When? To Kevin's family, you are in our thoughts and prayers. We will continue to fight for safer highways so that this heart ache does not have to be re-lived

My fiancé, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in SE Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Kevin did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Kevin be the last to die this way.
Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Trooper Floyd's family, friends, and co-workers are going through in losing him. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. Please know that my thoughts are with you and that you are not alone in your "journey". Should you ever need anything please do not hesitate to contact me. (The Davis County Sheriff's Office and COPS will also always know how to reach me.)
As a fallen officer "survivor" and a friend, please accept my condolences on behalf of myself and the McElderry family. I never got the opportunity to know Kevin but, I am certain he was well respected and well loved. Kevin will live on in the hearts of all the lives he touched. You were all blessed to have been able to know and love Kevin, even for a short time. I pray that Kevin and Dennis will continue to watch over us along with all the other fallen officers all as only they can.
Thank you Trooper Floyd for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiancé Dennis for me.
Wishing you and all those who loved you brighter and better days,
Jocelyne :)
