I will be riding in honor of Special Agent Sullivan in this year's Law Enforcement United 250-mile bike ride from Virgina Beach to Washington D.C., May 9-12. As a DSS Special Agent, it is my honor to be able to help memorialize Sully's service in this manner. I will be thinking of him and his family every mile of the way. God Bless!

Sully,
2012 begins another year I will think of you daily as not one day does go by that something doesn't remind me of your humor, your blue eyes twinkling incessantly as laughter is spread intentionally and unintentionally! Your commitment to life, family, country, honor, integrity and so much more is what you shared with the world; none of which will ever be forgotten. Peace, love & light! ~ Domino

Dearest Sullivan Family:
On this evening, the 1st of May into the morning of Monday the 2nd...I pray with all my heart and soul that our Navy Seals and all those involved in having brought about the demise of Usama Bin Laden brings you some modicum of closure.
There is nothing that can bring Stephen back to his loved ones; however, his life given and taken will never ever be in vain. This 'moment' in history, of celebration over the victory in taking down an evil, very evil figure will live in history books, will be remembered in photos, videos. The crowds in downtown DC and in Times Square, NYC celebrating are a tribute to the joy, relief and greatness our country feels toward those that fought and made the ultimate sacrifice in addition to those that continue to do so.
Stephen,
I continue daily, to say a prayer and I always see your smile... stay safe and one day, someday... we'll laugh together like old times!
Always,
kira

I first met Sully as a young college graduate working with him at the Devereux Treatment Center in Rutland, Massachusetts. Sully quickly took me under his wing, taught me the ropes, and became a fast friend. He was a great prankster and dubbed a group of us including himel at the Devereux foundation as "The Goon Squad". A characterization that was not received well by the adminstration and eventually a forbidden reference....Sully's response was "well o.k. then, just call us "The GS". Sully was a former Marine and I was former Army. We had many arguments over which branch produced the tougher soldier and eventually compromised and agreed that it was the Navy Seals. I knew in my heart that Sully was destined for a different path and hortly after, we visited a Navy Recruiter together in Groton, Connecticut and with my encouragement Sully sold me his car and was off to Navy Basic and BUDS/S. I picked Sully up from the airport when he first returned from the Navy and he was already sporting a long mustache and uncharistically long hair for the military but standard fair for an elite Navy Seal. We lost touch over the years but I thought of him often and wondered what he was up to. Just last night, and five years after his tragic death, my curiosity got the better of me and I decided to look him up. I cannot describe the grief that came over me as the words "killed in Iraq" raised across my computer screen in connection with his name. I told myself that his was a common name and that it must be somebody else that had perished. As the picture of my bright eyed friend appeared on the screen along with his obituary I was instantly reduced to tears. Sully was a special human being and I am so sad that I lost touch with him over the last several years. To his son: be proud....your father was a great man, a good friend, and died doing the work that he was destined to do. God speed my friend; always missed and never forgotten.

Although I never knew him, I will mourn this deep loss the rest of my life. What a great, fun-loving, responsible, patriotic man he must've been! Thanks to all those who wrote such descriptive things about him -- it made me even more sad that I never knew him, though. I'm sure I would have loved and admired him as much as you did. He looks a lot like my brother and that really makes it hit home. No matter how much time passes, I will remember him and his sacrifice; and I trust his last breath here was his first into a bright eternity where peace & joy abound, and he awaits us there. May dear friends and family find continued comfort in the love of God and the peace that only He can give. May you always know that you do not grieve alone, and even we who never knew him keep him in our hearts and look forward to meeting him on Heaven's celestial shore.

I knew Sully back in 1993 durring our early days in the Navy through Corps School, BUD/S and subsequently staff at Balboa Hospital. We lost contact over the years but when the "crew" gets together stories of our time with Sully invariably come up. I heard yesterday of his passing from another member of the crew. He was searching for Sully to give him a hard time. Needless to say I am in shock. Years have passed since our time back in the Navy but the friendships we have are timeless. My deep condolences to his family and son.

I just came across Sully's memorial. I had tried to look him up early last year, but could find no contact info. I am so sorry and stunned to hear about what happened that it still hasn't sunk in much.
I met Sully at Hospital Corpsman school in San Diego way back in '93. He was a class ahead, but was one of a core group of us that had plans to become SEALs. I followed him to my first duty station and quickly learned that in order to simply survive around Sully and his cronies, I'd have to quicken my wit and sharpen it's edge. We all had far more fun than should be allowed at Corps school, that first duty station, BUD/S. and the Naval Hospital.
Sully was a helluva guy who had a great sense of humor and was always up for a good adventure, be it midnight swims across La Jolla Cove, harrassing yuppies in downtown La Jolla, giving grief to senior ranking personnel or just partaking in the group bitching about the cold at BUD/S.
Although I haven't been in contact with him for some time, Sully invariably comes up in story and thought.
I'll miss the guy and I wish his family well.
Take care, brother, and rest in peace.

Just started to think about you the other nite as I was over my fathers. We were talking about how much you impacted my family and what an amazing person we are and always will be. I miss you a great deal and I wish I could have gotten a chance to say good bye. Just thought I'd check in.

To the family and friends of Special Agent Stephen Sullivan and his fellow agents in the US Department of State:
On behalf of our entire family, we wish to pay honor to Stephen's memory on the third anniversary of the day he so tragically lost his life. His heroism, valor and bravery will be forever remembered.
Looking at his picture with his radiant smile, I can see that he greeted life with passion. Reading his reflections. I can see he touched many lives in a positive way. I salute his profound sense of duty.
May you be continue to be comforted by the support and caring of your law enforcement family, and other police survivors. We grieve for you and with you. Our family lost our beloved Larry Lasater when he was fatally shot in April of 2005 during a foot pursuit of two bank robbers, so we know the anquish you are still experiencing.
Larry and Sullie were both brothers in green as well as blue. Semper Fi, Stephen.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the years of service Stephen gave to his community and the citizens of our country, and the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on September 19, 2005.

Stephen,
I remember the first time I saw you,
Walking into the Manhattan Hotel for UNGA 2003 briefing.
Numbers of people turned to see you walking in a little later than the group, calling out "Sulley".
You had an approachable air about you, that made it easy to be your friend.
Sharing breakfast, rides to work, and classes during RSO school, every minute was comfortable.
I heard you were hit, while I was picking up Mills at the Frankfurt airport on a day's layover.
We had a few that evening in your honor.
You are missed.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I met Steve over 20 years ago. He was an amazing person who worked harder than anyone I knew to better himself in every way. I just found out, today after speaking to his mother what happened.
Steve and I lost touch prior to him leaving for kabul. My last communication with Steve was a thank you card he send me,thanking me for giving him a personal reference to government. He told me he was offered a great position with a great organization.
I will miss you greatly my dear dear friend. I wish you could have known how much I looked up to you and how proud I AM of you. You will be forever in my heart. Till we meet again, keep shining bright, you will always be an inspiration to me. I love you pal.

I just found out today, not even an hour ago that Steve is gone.I am still sitting here in shock. I've had suspicions, but no way to contact his family to confirm. It all makes sense now. All contact ceased and emails being returned as "unrecognizable." Steve holds a place in my heart that no ther person ever will. He lit a fire in me that will never die. He had a passion and love for this country and what he was doing that is unparalleled. He is a hero. He is a hero to this country and a personal hero to me. I am who I am today because he pushed me. He saw me for everything I tried so hard to be. He was my own personal cheerleader and I will be his biggest fan for all eternity.
He holds all of my truest, most selfless love and I will never forget him.
