Reflections for Corporal Mark Wesley Carthron
My husband Mark was very dedicated and committed to the Arkansas State Police. He served his community with pride. He was very proud to wear the ASP patch. I love him with all my heart and soul, but I realize that God loved him best. I know he is in heaven watching over me, his family and the people he served and protected on a daily basis. Whether he gave you a warning, wrote you a ticket or if it was necessary to take someone to jail, he was simply and honestly doing his job and he did it with the proper procedures. I SALUTE him as well as all the other law enforcement personnel all over the world. Where would we be without them?
And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance for ye serve the Lord Christ. Colossians 4:23-24.
I sincerely appreciate all the condolences and prayers (mailed, telephoned, emailed on sent on line) from everyone in the loss of my beloved husband. My heart and prayers go out to the family and loved ones who have lost someone since the death of my husband. God is good and he will give us the strength to make it through. God Bless!
Mrs. Mark W. Carthron (Angela)

My fiancé, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in SE Iowa. Dennis died almost exactly the way Mark did. Dennis was deploying stop strips and was hit by a reserve office assisting during the chase. I was saddened to read Mark's story because it reminded me so much of my own. This can't be an easy time for you. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Trooper Carthon, especially his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. Please know that my thoughts are with you and that you are not alone in your "journey". Should you ever need anything please do not hesitate to contact me. (The Davis County Sheriff's Office and COPS will also always know how to reach me.)
As a fallen officer "survivor" and a friend, please accept my condolences on behalf of myself and the McElderry family. I never got the opportunity to know Mark but, I am certain he was well respected and well loved. Mark will live on in the hearts of all the lives he touched. You were all blessed to have been able to know and love Mark, even for a short time. I pray that Mark and Dennis will continue to watch over us along with all the other fallen officers all as only they can.
To the officer that hit Trooper Carthon, you are in my thoughts and prayers. Please don't hold yourself at fault for Trooper Carthon's death. You were just doing your job. Sometimes accidents happen. Dennis told me that all the time. Unfortunately he was right. I know he wouldn't have held the reserve officer that hit him at fault. I know if Dennis had his life to do over again he'd still be out on the road chasing the bad guy, helping to make this world a safer place for us all. If anyone's life had to be lost that night, I know Dennis would have rather it had been him over any of the other officers. He loved those guys that much. If Trooper Carthon was anything like my Dennis was he won't hold you at fault either. It will take his family time to come to grips with the situation, but I'm sure in time they too will have no ill will towards you either. Please continue on with your police work. The world needs good officers to keep us safe.
To Trooper Carthon, thank you so much for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Keep an eye on your family and friends and if you get a chance please say "hello" to my fiancé Dennis for me.
Wishing you and all those who loved you brighter and better days,
Jocelyne :)

Their hearts are too big
Their wallets too thin.
They're an integral part
Of the world we live in.
They're at work everyday;
Come rain, sleet or snow.
'Cause dedication and honor
Are all that they know.
They deal with the worst
Day in and day out.
They're the ones who come running
When it's help that you shout.
They wear badges and guns
These modern-day knights.
But neither of these
Protect them from fright.
They get hit, kicked and spit on
And oinked at like swine.
Yet they always come back
With boots and belt shined.
They stand their ground firm
When others would run.
And when it's over, they smile
As if to them it's great fun.
When all else is bad
They're the ones doing good.
Doing right by the law
As we all know we should.
Still often it seems
They get no respect.
Some even gripe
When they catch a suspect.
They violated my rights!
The guilty will say.
But how about what they
Give up everyday?
They don't see their kids,
Their husband or wife.
To the families it seems
That the job is the life.
They get slashed at and stabbed;
Beaten, bloodied and shot.
And all too often,
One gives all he's got.
Brave brothers and sisters
Is what they all are.
When one is killed,
They mourn near and far.
Only then do we see
Their toughness wear thin.
And just for a moment,
They let us all in.
They're human you see,
These warriors true.
Regardless of if
They wear green, brown or blue.
They distinguish themselves
Above all the rest.
And it's not just about
The badge on their chest.
For they see the things
We don't want to see.
They are the ones
That protect you and me.
They do all the things
Only the finest will do.
They're the brave men and women
Of the thin line of blue.
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God."

To the family and friends of Trooper Mark Carthron and his fellow officers in the Arkansas State Police:
On behalf of our entire family, I wish to extend our sincerest condolences on the tragic death of Trooper Carthron. This must be a tremendous blow to his loved ones, and the Arkansas State Police. I know events like this are hard to comprehend.
We grieve for you and with you. We also share your anquish as we recently lost our beloved Larry Lasater of the Pittsburg Police Department as he was fatally shot during a foot pursuit of two bank robbers. May you be comforted by the warm embrace of understanding and support you will get from the law enforcement community and other police survivors.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the service Mark gave to his community and the citizens of Arkansas, and the supreme sacrifice he and her family made on September 12, 2005.

May the Lord our God comfort and support you through these difficult days and may you know a large family of Law Enforcement Officers are keeping you in our prayers. To the family of Trooper Carthron, take care of yourselves and be patient as healing begins. To the officers involved, reach out for the support of professionals who can help you make sense of this. It is too hard to face alone and you don't have to! My heart aches for you all. To Trooper Carthron: Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Go now to your resting place with the Lord and keep a watchful eye on those of us left behind.
God bless,
