My fiancé, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in SE Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Shawn did. Dennis died in much the same way that Shawn did, while deploying stop strips. I still remember the day that Dennis got those stop strips. He was so excited because none of the other officers in his department had had ones just like them. Dennis was so passionate about his job, just as I'm sure Shawn was. It's disheartening to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Shawn be the last to die this way.
Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Silvera's family, friends, and co-workers are going through in losing him. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. Please know that my thoughts are with you and that you are not alone in your "journey". Should you ever need anything please do not hesitate to contact me. (The Davis County Sheriff's Office and COPS will also always know how to reach me.)
As a fallen officer "survivor" and a friend, please accept my condolences on behalf of myself and the McElderry family. I never got the opportunity to know Shawn but, I am certain he was well respected and well loved. Shawn will live on in the hearts of all the lives he touched. You were all blessed to have been able to know and love Shawn, even for a short time. I pray that Shawn and Dennis will continue to watch over us along with all the other fallen officers all as only they can.
Thank you Officer Silvera for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiancé Dennis for me.
Wishing you and all those who loved you brighter and better days,
Jocelyne :)

I worked with you at the beginning of your career Shawn, you were a great CSO. I remember what a soft spoken, caring, and concerned person you were. It was an honor working with you. May you rest in peace and may your family and friends carry on with their heads high knowing that they lived with a hero.

We Remember The Officers
We remember the officers who changed our lives,
The men and woman who protected us day and night,
People who respect for their dedication to the cause,
For when faced with danger, they never even pause.
We remember the officers who always stood true,
Whatever the color of uniform, brown gray or blue,
With pride and integrity they say "To serve and protect",
For the giving of their life, we offer our respect.
We remember the officers who we never really knew,
Persons strong enough to answer the challenge are few,
With heavy hearts we mourn the officers in eternal rest,
There's more to these people than the badge on their chest.

To the family, friends, and co-workers of Shawn,
May you somehow find peace at this terrible time in your lives. I pray that his children will always know their daddy. Know him for his bravery for putting his life on the line each and every day to protect the innocent. He now protects the ones he loves most from his heavenly watch. I pray for Shawn's wife as she now stuggles with a path of life she never intended to follow. I wish I had words of wisdom learned from our own loss, but there are never words to take away this pain. The only advice I could give is to keep his memory alive, especially to his children. My advice to family members, friends and co-workers is to ALWAYS be there for his wife and kids. Don't drift away in a few months, that is when the reality really sets in for the family, and that is when you are needed most.
