Reflections for Police Officer Richard W. Smith, Jr.
"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I just want to thank you for what you have done for your community and country... I just watched your story on dateline and it sickens me to think that one animal can carry so much evil in them...
Bless you and your family always....

Officer Smith,
Two years ago you were called home, and many years from now you will still be remembered. You had the rare courage to choose a profession that asks SO much of you. You gave the utmost sacrifice, and in doing so, you left behind a legacy of profound dedication and committment.
How can we ever thank you for that?

To the family and loved ones of Officer Richard King and his fellow officers with the Albuquerque Police Departmtent:
On this the first anniversary of Richard's tragic death, I wanted to honor and remember him today. Richard's professionalism and dedication will never be forgotten.
In reading the loving reflections left by his friends and co-workers I can see that he was very well respected and is sorely missed. I hope that God is holding him in the sweetest part of his heart and the most gentle part of his soul.
I am so sorry that Richard was robbed of his life so tragically, but through his heroism and the profound sense of duty with which he lived his life, he made an immeasurable difference. May his spirit continue to soar and may his memory continue to inspire.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Richard gave to his community and the citizens of New Mexico, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on August 18, 2005.

Officer Smith and family,
Of course all of Albuquerque is thinking of you and officer King, since the death of officer McGrane. How sad it is that we have lost another Hero. I made the giant badges that were left at your memorial. I will now leave one for Officer McGrane. I also displayed 2 badges on my truck for you and Officer King to honor you and I have also done the same for officer McGrane. I pray for strength in your families and the officers that are still serving proudly. I also pray for God's protection upon all officers. Thank you so much for the ultimate price you have paid.
My heart aches knowing that there are so many of you willing to go out and protect us.
God Bless!

Richard I know we never really worked around each other much. But I do remember some times where we assisted each other on accidents when you on motors. You seemed to be a quiet guy and I don't think I ever saw you get upset at anyone. I believe that is one of the many qualities that make a good officer. You will be missed. Hey if Mike is still popping wheelies tell him to have fun. hahahahahha

Lord,
He was yours to give,
and yours to call home,
please stand by his brothers,
so they don't feel alone,
dry the tears of his family,
so they clearly see:
that he gave his all,
so all could have peace.
Blessed are they,
the children of God,
with heavy hearts,
and honor they trod,
to pay their respects,
to give their salute,
and to ask for your mercy,
on heroes in Blue.
Richard, rest easy brother, we have the watch.

Brother Smith,
May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
And the rains fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
Respectfully,
You’re Brothers in Blue
