Reflections for Police Officer Roy Lundell Nelson, Jr.

Thank you for your unselfish service. May you and Casear rest in peace

Roy,

It was just early Friday morning that Ceasar was busy putting a hole into my uniform and vest. The smile on your face as you were walking up to me, thinking Ceasar bit me in the rear, was priceless. How ironic, I was Caesar's first real bite (training with you at the airport) and his last when he bit me in the back and arm. My arm still bares the marks of those sharp canines. Roy, you were the best to work with. It is truly a shame to have lost such a great friend. Bravo squad will never be the same. It was truly a pleasure to work with a man whose devotion to his family and his dedication to his community was like no other. You will be dearly missed but never forgotten. My deepest prayers are with your family. Go in peace “My Brother“, you and Ceaser together. Protect the gate of Heaven like you protected the streets of NSB. God Speed!

Roy was a good man, father, husband, friend, and for so many a brother. Now the depatment of NSB has an angel to back them up at every call. He is a true hero to all the people who's lives he touched the seven years he protected and served. Him and his family are in my thoughts.

To the family and friends of Officer Nelson and fellow officers of the New Smyrna Beach Police Department: I wanted to extend my sincerest condolences on the great loss you have suffered when Officer Nelson lost his life while responding to a burglary call. I am sure the department and family must be devasated at the loss of Officer Nelson and his canine partner. My heart goes out to all of you as my family shares the same agony. We lost our beloved Larry Lasater of the Pittsburg, CA POlice Department when he was fatally shot on April 23rd. He was on a foot pursuit of two bank robbers when he was ambushed and shot above his vest.
He too leaves a young child behind, although his son was not born until a few months after his death. We grieve with you and for you. Heaven has another new hero, but how I wish it wasnt't so. Officer Nelson's valor and bravery will be forever remembered and honored. I hope that the driver who fled the scene will be caught and justice rendered. This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for his service to his community in New Smyrna Beach, and for the supreme sacrifice that he and his family made.

We share your grief and pain and disbelief. A police officer is a special kind of person, and EVERY day they put their lives on the line....I never really realized the power and strength of the thin blue line until last September. Our love and prayers are with you and your family. He has joined our precious son and all their other brothers and sisters in Blue.

Our family's hearts unite in sympathy to Office Nelson's family and Caesar. Their deaths were nearly identical to my father's almost 40 years ago. It is so incredibly sad to realize that inattentive drivers remain a problem for law enforcement officers trying to perform their jobs.
Know that Roy and Caesar will never be forgotten.
