God’s Hero in Blue

He walked life’s lonely path with honor, Lord,

Protecting those you sent his way…

Until, at last, with task well done,

Your call is heard today.

We hear you saying:

“Come, my friend, with me apart…from years of service rest.

You’ve helped the poor, protected all, you’ve passed Life’s every test.

You did not falter, did not fail though weary was your soul

I saw your tears, I felt your fears…I helped you toward your goal.

Beneath that badge there beat a heart, strong, courageous, true…

When duty called, you answered, my hero dressed in blue!

Come, my friend, your reward awaits: the law you did obey.

Faithful through life’s endless storms you showed my people the way.

Your beat is ended; roll call’s done! Now, rest on Heaven’s shore.

The good you did so willingly will remain forever more.”

Thank you; Father, for your great love as we cherish his memory dear

We offer this brave soul to you…be with him ever near.

And when, at last, we hear your call may we each take our place

On Heaven’s shore, eternal home, beneath your kindly gaze.

Mcbride you will never be forgotten. If you were not training with Jones, you were with CJ. And you know Jones, he was entirely to hyper until I saw how hyper you were. You put Jones to shame. Man you were such a good Officer. I just cant believe that the lord has summoned one of his angels up to heaven so early. It hurts so bad knowing that we cant laugh and joke when we work overtime on the weekends. Oh yea, Jones would tell me the horror stories of you trying to convert him to a trekkie.

James for you to only have 2 years on you had sooooo much potential. It hurts me to look at your picture, because I know I will never be able to talk to you again. Man you were so funny, and you drove CJ and Jones crazy. I am absolutely positive you would have been Officer of the year for 2005, but the lord had other plans for you. Look over us Jimmy and relax, you have done more in 2 years than some do in 10. Its our turn to take over, just look over us brother.

God Speed Bro....God Speed.

TO: The family; loved ones; friends and department members: A POLICE OFFICER’S PRAYER:--- O, gentle Lord ! Keep the day/night watch with me. As I begin my tour of duty, I ask your protection from all mental, physical and spiritual harm. Sustain me with the knowledge that I am doing your work, endeavoring to keep peace among your people. Help me to be just as I enforce the law without prejudice or favor to anyone. May I be courageous but not reckless in carrying out my duties. Let me respond to all calls with haste realizing that so many are dependent upon me for life and safety. Support me with your consoling power when I am tempted to think no one really cares and that I am taken for granted. Sustain in me the conviction that so many thousands do care and are grateful for my presence. Grant that I may be loyal to my partner and my fellow officers, and that I may back them up effectively when called upon for assistance. Lord, I ask that I may return safely, after my tour of duty, to my loved ones and those who love me. I pray that I may be a good and honorable police officer; and after my tour of duty is over here on earth, may I enjoy the peace and happiness of heaven that you have promised to those who serve you well. AMEN. *** REST IN PEACE ***

I met Jim on our first day of classes during my freshman year at American University. During the next couple of years, we worked closely together while working for the school's campus TV station. Jim always had a passion for every task he took on. While we didn't stay in touch over the last several years, I am very glad I got the chance to know him.

Rest in peace, Jim.

Upon the markers of their graves
Our heroes etched in names we save
For all the life they gave with pride
To keep the peace within life's stride

To honor serve and do their best
To keep us safe through any quest
They gave up what was theirs to share
Their spirits shall be always near

No fear within the hearts and minds
To keep us safe within our times
The glory that is ours to see
Those special hearts of bravery

They have walked where no man dare
Their lives in danger with no care
For they have given all they could
For their courage we have stood

In awe of every one who gave
His life for others who they saved
So we will know their contribution
Their firm resolve and resolution

For those they left with hearts so broken
In every whispered word that's spoken
We bow our heads in confirmation
In every word life's revelation

Those who stand within their shoes
Will follow courage as they choose
And give to all the best they had
They carry on with spirits glad

We will know that they walked through
With colors bright and hearts so true
No Island stands alone they say
For heroes they are born this way

Protecting those with loyalty
A glimpse of so much royalty
Within the years of courage bound
These officers have earned their crown

Upon the earth we shall remember
The special goals and all their thunder
That proves a hero came our way
Who left their hearts on earth to stay.

Two years ago, we sat in the recruiting room at the academy wondering what we all had gotten ourselves into. We were civilians who all either gave up previous careers or was just starting a new one. We got yelled at repeatedly by the staff. Nevertheless, from that point on, most of the 37 strangers who sat in the classroom that day would start an eight month journey which would bring us all together in true brotherhood like nothing we had ever experience in life before that.

While in the academy, I got to know you not only as a fellow Recruit Officer, but as a friend. You would tap my brain to get information on the city that we would eventually be sworn to protect, which is my hometown and lifelong place of residence. I would repeatedly tap your brain to get information on anything law related since you was a great law student. Some of things you told me in regards to law will forever be remembered by me. Additionally we would stay after and study just to insure that we not only pass the test, but ace them with high scores. We were successful in that. During the physical and specialized training, we ran beside each other as if to make sure that the other would accomplish the goal. During the whole academy, a true bond was built like no other. I will never forget the stories you told me in regards to your upbringing in Boston. And it was the greatest feeling once we walked across the stage during graduation and received our badges. You would eventually go to 1D and I would go to 4D. But that didn't stop us from communicating and keep up with each other.

I would gladly listen to your success stories you told me in regards to your experiences in 1D. You never once complained about anything. You were eager to make your beat(101) the safer know that you were there. And I know that you did. You were awarded the Rookie of the year and you DEFINITELY DESERVED IT! You made the department proud. You made your fellow 1D officers and officials proud. You made your friends proud of you(me included). You made your former 2003-5 classmates proud.

Man, you will be sorely missed. I wish you didn't leave us so soon. However I do know that you are in heaven looking down on us. I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU MCBRIDE. NEVER. It is often said that, "The Good Die Young."
You were young(25). You was a GREAT officer. Rest in peace my friend. Please help keep watch over me and make me safe. I will be sure to carry on when you left off my friend.

Jim was a friend of mine from college at American University. He was always very friendly and outgoing and as long as I knew him worked in some form of public service in the DC area. He always wanted to serve and help people. I am shocked and saddened by his sudden death. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and all of his friends, he will be missed.
