Reflections for Detective Terry Lee Melancon, Jr.

Terry,

We really miss you. Thank you for blessing us with your spirit and taking care of us while here. Now that you are back home, look over us and know that we will never forget.

Terry,
I regret that I never had the opportunity to interact with you on either a personal or professional basis. The words and emotions I heard from your family, friends, and brother officers with BRPD stay with me now as well as when I first heard them at your memorial service.
It is obvious to all that you upheld the very professionalism that all of us in law enforcement must continue to strive for. That you were forcefully taken from your service on earth just over two months ago is only comforted in the knowledge that you continue the service of the higher calling that you practiced each day here on earth.
Terry, know that even those that never knew you mourn not only in your passing, but in the missed opportunity of getting to know you. Also know that any assistance your folks, your sisters, or your fiance' may ever need is yet but a phone call away.
Thank you for your service here on earth and in your continued service from up above.

E. Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office

To my sweet brother Terry. Not a second goes by when I dont think of you and your bravery. Proud seems like an understatement. There is a whole in my heart that I must learn to live with now, but the assurance that it will be filled again keeps me going. You made it, all you ever worked for as a servant has paid off! See you on the other side.

Just the day before Terry was gunned down my dad, in East Tennessee, was gunned down by an escapee and his wife. I am broken inside as your family knows first hand. I am reading through odmp.org to somehow ease my pain. I pray that God will comfort your pain in the coming days. My prayers are with you...

My classmate, my brother, my brave friend... We had a great time in Basic Narcotics Investigations class, even though the class was mentally challenging. But that never stopped your focus and motivation on learning and listening what the instructors had to say. During the class we became workout partners and you gave me good pointers. Even today my muscle still hurts. But what hurts me the most is the day I called your office to see how you were doing down in Louisiana and a Detective told me you were no longer in the office, but was killed in the line of duty. Even as I write this, a tear runs down my face. I was so surprised to hear you were no longer with us. You are truly a brave guardian. To the Melancon family and the Baton Rouge Police Department, I salute you and I am sorry for your lost. Terry was a great guy.

Terry, you can now relax in heaven and we will continue to answer the calls against evil. We will see each other again my friend. Rest In Peace.

I am so lucky to have gotten the chance to know Terry (even if he did hit my car on accident!) Not only was he a great friend... but he loved his job, and he died doing what he loved the most. Everytime we would go out he would always talk about his job. He would say, "Am I boring you?" and I would always reply, "no." even if he was because I could look in his eyes and see that glow. You will be missed by many. Ask God and his angles to watch over us. WE LOVE YOU AND WE MISS YOU DETECTIVE MELANCON!!
