To the family and loved ones of Correctional Officer Wayne (Cotton) Thomas and his fellow officers with the Tennessee Department of Corrections:

On this the first anniversary of Cotton's tragic death, I wanted to honor and remember him today. Although I never had the privilege of meeting Cotton, I feel as if I know him through the loving reflections left by loved ones and friends. His valor and courage will never be forgotten.
The lessons he taught to those he mentored will be carried forward.

I hope that God is holding him in the sweetest part of his heart and the most gentle part of his soul.

I am so sorry that Cotton was robbed of his life so tragically, but through his heroism and the profound sense of duty with which he lived his life, he made an immeasurable difference. May his spirit continue to soar and may his memory continue to inspire.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the twenty eight years of dedicated service Cotton gave to his community and the citizens of Tennessee, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on August 9, 2005.

Officer Morgan,

Even in your final moments on this earth, your thoughts were to help secure the lives of your partner and the innocents around you. Your brave and selfless act helped to do just that. What would we do without such courageous men..even for one day? Rest now, brother, in the arms of the Almighty. We honor your life and your sacrifice. May God grant peace to those who whose lives you touched and who still grieve..until we all meet in heaven.

Here it is going to be Christmas in about 2 days. We miss you so much. It broke our hearts to lose you, but part of us went with you. We have your memories and your love you'll always be at our side. Our family chain was broken, but as God calls us one by one the chain will link again. We love you

May I "ditto" what Gail has said. We are trying to focus on the positives that dad left us. A very special thank you goes out to Kingston Elementary School in Kingston for their hard work in raising money for the bullet proof vests for Porky and Sam and the many other officers out there protecting us from these people. As we struggle through the holidays continue to pray that God will comfort. I want to pick up the phone and call the prison and ask for tower #2. He always answered the phone, "2...Morgan" Missing you, always!

Thanksgiving has passed, but everyday is a day to give thanks for something the Lord provides. We, the family of Cotton, thank God for the privilege of having him as long as we did and his testimony that lives on. We pray justice will be swift and no delays in the trial of Jennifer and George Hyatte in July and August of 2006. If these people truly repent, God will accept them in His presence just as He did Cotton. If they don't, their eternity is decided by them. We are trying to focus on the positive influence Cotton left, so if you are praying people help us pray a swift end to the negative side of this. We only wish those who so carelessly take life could live in our shoes for the rest of their lives and feel the pain of watching a Mom and a wife and children go to bed and wake up aching in their hearts for the part of their lives that is now missing. We appreciate more than you could ever know the sharing of grief that has been poured out in these pages. It has been and remains a comfort as you write your thoughts.

While I never had the privelige of working with Cotton, I remember working with people at DSNF and MTRC who knew him well. It was an honor to work for the same agency as this man, though I never knew him personally. I pray that his wife and children will be surrounded by love this Christmas, and may his legacy of dedication and proud service live on.
