The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"

On behalf of the staff of Northeast Correctional Complex, TDOC, I wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the family of Officer Morgan and our friends at BMCX. Several of our staff had the pleasure of knowing and working with Cotton, and even those of us who had never met him are outraged at this senseless lost.
We salute Cotton Morgan for his service to our great country, our department, his family, and to God. May he rest in peace and know that through his courage he touched so many lives and brought tremendous pride back to our staff and our brother law enforcement officers around the world.

Although I did not know Officer Wayne Cotton personally, I know many people who did. From what I have been told, he was a wonderful Christian man. He was involved with the prison ministry at the Morgan County Jail on a weekly basis and visited with residents of the nursing often. This tragedy has resulted in a great loss for the people of Morgan County, but it's Heaven's gain. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. God Bless.

I have been following this tragic story for the past couple of days. My heart truly goes out to CO Morgan's family, friends, and co-workers. To think that two people could do something so selfish is a disgrace! Please accept my condolences.

My Division has suffered two Line of Duty deaths within the last year, we know the shock and sadness that goes with losing a brother or sister. No matter the distance, we suffer along with the family and friends of Officer Morgan.
Thankfully, a taxi driver tipped off USMS as to the whereabouts of the cowards who are responsible. It gives me great pride to know that my Division assisted in that apprehension. It also reminds me that no matter the uniform, department or location where I work, I am not alone. LEOs' everywhere were working to end this manhunt because it was personal, they killed a brother officer.
