Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Larry William Cantrell

My heart goes out to the family of Officer Cantrell for their tragic loss of Officer Cantrell and his father. The circumstances and loss of two loved family members are horrific. My deepest sympathy also to the law enforcement family of Officer Cantrell for the pain they too are suffering.
I lost my son this past April when he was brutally shot while on a foot pursuit of two robbery suspects. The enormous support our entire family was given by the law enforcement community was overwhelming. They have been, and continue to be, by our side on the difficult journey we now find ourselves as police survivors. I am sure you will be given the same comfort that we received when we lost our own Larry. You are in our thoughts and prayers. This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the service Officer Cantrell gave to his community and to the supreme sacrifice that he and his family have made while he was performing his duty.

It's hard to understand why the great ones are taken from us. I guess it's not up to us to us to debate it but to accept and continue. In my 14 years of Law Enforcement experience, I have attended far more Law Enforcement funerals than I care to recall. However I know this will be the hardest. I had the honor to work with Larry for about 2 1/2 years. In that time I watched Larry rise from the rank of Dispatcher to Police Officer with the greatest of ease. Larry was one of the finest Police Officers I have ever had the privledge to work with, always in good spirits, and full of praise for his fellow officers with a burning eagerness to learn more about the profession he had chosen for himself. I can't even begin to imagine the pain Larry's family is having to go through. My thoughts and prayers are certainly with Larry's family. Larry, Keep your watch under control where you now patrol and know someday we will again patrol a shift together!

I first read about the tragic death of Larry and his father in the Monday morning Tulsa World. It tears at my heart every time another name will be etched into the National Memorial. Though I didn't personally know Larry, I found out this evening that Larry was the next door neighbor of my friends. It adds a personal touch to the tragedy that doesn't make it any easier to deal with or understand. Godspeed Officer Cantrell, your service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"

This type of tradegy hits home to me. My wife is a Ret. NYS Trooper - due to an on-duty MVA. At this time I am currently off sick - due to an on-duty MVA which happened the same day Officer Cantrell made that ultimate sacrifice.
