Dwayne Reeves was one of the best Newark police officers on the job. Ive known Dwayne since our high schools years together at Essex Catholic. In all the years Ive known him the one thing I will never forget is his love for life and the smile he always had on his face. Rest in peace my friend. Your life on earth will be missed.

Where does anyone get the courage
and interest to become a police
officer these days? It seems like its
worse than russian roulette and not
getting any easier. God bless those
with broken hearts. May you feel His
presence and know His peace. He
is close to the brokenhearted. Psalm 34 is a wonderful psalm for
those who are in pain and need the
assurance that God cares and answers prayer. So sorry you are
having to travel this long and difficult
road. With love from one coast of
America to the other.

Our hero of blue has fallen
A time of peace was calling
For you to go with God above
He'll give you wings of blue with love
To send a message for everyone
To remember a life and what was done
A dream fulfilled of our angel of blue
We honor you for the job you swore to do
A promise was kept from a hero like you
You put your life on the line that day
To protect and serve in everyway
And to give you thanks we will do our part
To share your message and to keep you in our heart ...

"My Brother"

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was idealistic and believed he could make a difference.
He was immensely proud of the uniform and the badge and what
they represent.
He felt privileged to be of service to his department, his
community and to his country.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was friendly, courteous, and polite, yet firm.
He laughed and joked, but was serious when necessary.
He was competent, trained, and professional.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He had a strong sense of right and wrong and became
frustrated when true justice became sidetracked.
He felt the sharp criticism that goes with the job, but he
never wavered.
He stood by and for his fellow officers.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He longed for his family during the long hours.
He worried about them during his shifts and the lonely
weekends, holidays and midnights when they were apart.
He felt guilty about the lost time, but knew his calling
and prayed they would understand.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was a good son, a loving husband, and a devoted father.
He was dedicated to the profession and cared about the
people he served.
He wanted to do the best job that he could and strived to
be the best he could be.
He was a good citizen and a good neighbor.

He was a cop.

Yes, I did know him.
He was a cop, he was my Brother.

Special Officer Dwayne Reeves was my cousin. Although I knew what he did for a living, I guess I never thought such a tradgedy could happen to him. The bullet that ended his life not only took away a great man, but also shattered that hearts of all those who loved him.

The only silver lining that I can find in this tragedy is knowing that Dwayne died doing what he loved. I rejoice in the knowledge that the gates of heaven are now being protected by such a great "angel".

Dwayne, I will always love and miss you.

My fiancé, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in SE Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Dwayne did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Dwayne be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Special Officer Reeves; family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through these tough times, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you and that you are not alone in your "journey". Should you ever need anything please do not hesitate to contact me. (Dennis' department will also always know how to reach me.)

As a fallen officer "survivor" and a friend, please accept my condolences on behalf of myself and the McElderry family. I never got the opportunity to know Dwayne but, I am certain he was well respected and well loved. Dwayne will live on in the hearts of all the lives he touched. You were all lucky to have had him be a part of your lives, even for a short time. I pray that Dwayne will continue to watch over us all as only he can.

Thank you Special Officer Reeves for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiancé Dennis for me.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)
