Reflections for Special Officer Dwayne Anthony Reeves
I haven't seen or spoken to Dwayne since 1979. We were childhood friends that drifted apart in the usual way. Today I got an email from Classmates.com that told me Dwayne had recently registered; "do you want to email Dwayne?" they asked. I was inclined to ignore the message, precluding that the years and distance between two kids who ate lunch together in nursery school and first grade would be too large a gap to bridge today. But the memories came flooding back pretty quickly. I can honestly remember Dwayne at 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 years old looking exactly the same way he does now. Vivid images of him scheming, on the move, jumping into some adventure or another cascaded through my head as I drafted a quick 'wassup' message. He was one of those few people who somehow never leaves you no matter how long your apart, and I was looking forward to the reunion. Right before I sent the message though, I did a quick Google search of his name to see what would come up. I wasn't at all surprised to find that his rare combination of charisma and courage led him into law enforcement. Protecting other peoples lives for a living. I don't know how to express my anger, shock and sorrow about the way he left us, or my sympathy for his still young family. And I don't know how to recover the part of me or my childhood that left with him. In the end, I guess and I hope that I will be encouraged to do a even just a little but more in the direction that he gave his life for. But for the moment, I'm stunned and stilled by this loss.

Dwayne,
I remember the fun times that we all shared as a family and especially our outings. One memory in particular was at the Snake & Animal Farm during feeding time when you picked up a hand full of worms and chased your mother and I as you were laughing and running behind us. We have so many good memories of you Dwayne and want you to know how precious they are to me.
Dwayne I love you so very much and look forward to the day that we can laugh and be together again.
I love you,
Mommie

Dear Dwayne,
I felt so helpless as I sat with you in the hospital. I always looked out for you and Damon. We had a lot of good times. In case you didn't know you were my best friend as well as my brother. I will always cherish the time we had together. I know that you and Ma are united and watching over us. I miss you. Love Always, Roni

Officer Reeves,
As I sat at you funeral I couldn't help but to notice all the unity that filled that church. It takes a special person to bring that many people togetherfrom all over the country and celebrate the life of a hard working man...
To the officers around the world, I challenge each and every one of you to look beyond the patch on your shoulder and respect, protect, and assist one another. The enemy is umong us and we will prevail. Until parents take responsibility for their childrens behaviors we will forever be the target of someones misplaced aggression. We will prevail, hold on and hold hands,
WE ARE ONE OF THE SAME!!!!!!!!!!

Dwayne was my brother, there are no words that can describe how much you will be missed. Growing up we shared many laughs and experiences together. We always had each others back no matter what. I know you're in a better place now,no more pain or sorrow. But I look forward to that day when we can laugh together again. Now Ma has one of us with her. You'll be missed by many.
In Days of Great Peace

I knew Dwayne, and a fine officer he was. Many days he helped lift your spirits with just a kind conversation and a joke. He did this because he wasn't just a wonderful officer but a kind-hearted, fun loving, honest individual. All of his qualities didn't just shine through him out of uniform but in it as well. To him I say goodbye and to his family I give my heartfelt condolences and prayer to help them move forward from this act of heroism yet tragedy.

Policeman's Prayer
Oh almighty God,
Whose great power and eternal
Wisdom embraces the universe,
Watch over all Policemen and
Law Enforcement Officers.
Protect them from harm
In the performance of their duty
To stop crime,robberies,
Riots and violence.
We pray, help them keep our streets
And homes safe day and night.
We recommend them to your loving care
Because their duty is dangerous.
Grant them your unending strength and
Courage in their daily assignments.
Dear God protect these brave
Men and Women,
Grant them your almighty protection,
Unite them safely with their
Families after duty has ended.

Somebody killed a policeman today,
and a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect,
will be buried with him at his side.
The suspect that shot him will stand up in court,
with counsel demanding his rights.
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,
and spend many long, lonely nights.
The beat that he walked was a battle field too,
just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
to his name they will add a gold star.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
a cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
and he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call, of himself gave his all,
and a part of America died.
"Blessed are the peacekeepers, for they shall be called the sons of God."
