It has been 16 years since that altercation on Wicks Road changed all our lives forever. You are and always will be our hero. You did your job and it cost you your life. My big brother gone in the blink of an eye. Your memories will always be in our hearts. I will honor and respect you and ALL police officers. Your jobs are not easy and YOU gave it your all. I will keep your memories alive by sharing stories and always supporting your brothers and sisters in blue. Your life mattered....to our family , the NYSP and all that knew you. We wil love and miss you forever....
Your loving sister, Muriel

Tom
Thanks for your 33 years of faithful service to the NYSP. Obviously you loved your job and could have retired, but you kept doing what you enjoyed. I too spent a bulk of my career in investigations. Anyway, thanks for your honorable and dedicated service. To your sister Kathleen--law enforcement is an honorable profession and is still filled with the same type of people that your brother was--dedicated, faithful, hard working and motivated by the notion that he was doing good for society and making NY a better place to live. Do not be dismayed with anti-police propaganda. We honor Tom and others like him. There is no doubt that he was a great peace officer who made a "difference" and as a result NY was a better place.

Thank you for your service and please know that your sacrifice is one that will never, ever be forgotten. Rest in peace always.
To your sister Kathleen, I am also sickened by the anti police sentiment out there which is pushed on time and time again by a poisonous and biased media. I have always been an ODMP visitor but as is the case with all things in life, sometimes family and life's obligations take us away from things we enjoy. As such, the last few years I wasn't as frequent of a visitor as I used to be. In light of the anti police climate, I stopped reading and watching all news outlets and instead felt my spare time is better served honoring the amazing men and women who have sacrificed everything for many of the very same people who now vilify and demonize them. Amazing men like your brother, who I can only hope you take some small solace in the fact that he and your family will never be forgotten and he will always be honored by the LE brethren and family.
God Bless your family and rest in peace always Investigator O'Neill.

Today is the 15th year that my big brother is not with us.It is so much harder to pay trubute to him in this anti police climate but I will. He was a person who went into the Police department to help and make the world a better place, just like a majority of the officers that I know. I am glad he is not here to see all this. I will tell you what kind of person he was. He would do anything for anyone and showed respect to all. He did not care about color, religion, or race. He only cared about good versus evil and how he could make things better for all. I am proud to be the sister of a Police Officer who died doing what he loved, protecting and serving his community and state. I love you Tom. Until we meet again.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 7th anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.
I pray for solace for all those that love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Thanks to your family and friends for sharing their devotion to you through their reflections.

Tom worked for me for some time at the old Islip station following his transfer from the Long Island State Parkway PD. 1/1/1980. He was a good cop and above all a gentleman, liked by all that knew him.

Today is 5 years since you were taken from us so abruptly on this day July 6,2005. As I think about all that has happened in our family since then, births, weddings, graduations, all without you, it makes my heart ache. You were the one who all the kids looked up to and loved. And You loved them all unconditionally. Not a day goes by that I don't of you. Until we meet again....

As I returned from my grandson's soccer game, all the memories of you and your devotion to your nieces and nephews came flooding back . Not a day goes by that I don't think of you and miss you. You were a caring, loving uncle and as Brianna's wedding approaches and I realize you won't be there, it leaves a void that will never be filled. Until we meet again, I love you.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

As I was visiting the ODMP today, July 6, I came upon your name. I offer my belated condolences to your family, and to all those whose lives you touched.
My brother was a member of the NYS Police too. He was a Trooper stationed with Troop T out of the Tarrytown Barracks near the Tappan Zee Bridge. He also was lost in the performance of his duty on this exact date in 1961 at the age of 29 after serving for only 3 1/2 years. He was very proud to be a part of such a fine and dedicated organization as the NYS Police.
I will include you from this day forward in my prayers and I will never forget your sacrifice in protecting and serving your community.
May God's perpetual light shine upon the soul of Investigator Thomas M. O'Neill and may he rest in His eternal peace.
May God bless your family as you watch over them from above.
With my deepest sympathy.
