Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Jerry Ortiz

I know you are in heaven watching over us. I miss you so much. Please continue to watch over Chela, Jeremy, Jacob and the entire family and your friends.

October 5, 2005

Bro, I can't believe you're gone. I still think of all the great times we had. Man, we had some good times. I remember being at your wedding and seeing you and Chela together, so happy. I was happy to see that you were finally happy. You told me that you married your soul mate and your smile was bigger that day than I have ever seen it. Good for you, bro, you deserved that type of love. We'll continue to watch over her and your boys. I know you'll be watching over all of us. You're missed. I'll see you in heaven.

I think of you so much everyday. I miss you more than I can say, I still have such a hard time accepting that you were taken away from us. Please continue to watch over everyone like I know you are doing. I am doing all the things we talked about. Thank you for still being here for me, and for sharing the most precious gifts you have with me. I love you so much.........

Jerry:
The day I heard about your passing, I was very saddened. I didn't know you at all, but as someone who has aspired to be in law enforcement all her life, it made me want to cry to see what the world had come to. The first thing I thought about was your family, your wife and your children. You seem to have been such an awesome guy. Since then, I have had the priveledge of meeting your brother Miguel, and through him I have learned so much more about you. So much that I feel like I know you. I have the greatest respect for you and all you have done.

Jerry, I miss you a million times more than I did a minute ago. The pain of you leaving has left a big hole in our hearts. Alexis and I will never forget how proud we are to have you as a uncle and brother. We miss you at Jeremy's football games with that big proud smile. We miss just being able to hear that laugh, to see that smile, and most of all to hear your voice. Jerry, thank you for being my brother! You will always be remembered! Fight On Bro!

I am also a former neighbor - from Seaman Avenue in El Monte. I remember Jerry as a young man, one of the older brothers of Claudia, my daughter's playmate. I was stunned when I saw Jerry's picture flash on my TV screen. I didn't want to believe it. I searched the internet and was gradually forced to acknowledge that yes, this was Rosa's son and the brother of Sylvia, Arthur, Claudia and Michael. My deepest sympathy to the entire Ortiz family. I have also read that Sylvia's husband was killed. So much loss for a good,hard-working family. My thoughts are with all of you.

Last night, we honored your memory and your birthday. Your beautiful family was there ... Chela, Jeremy, Jacob, mom, sister, brothers ... many relatives and quite a few of your wonderful friends.

You should have seen the love and unity. You would have been so proud.

1st Corinthians 13
Love bears all things, believes
all things, hopes all things, endures all things..... So faith, hope, love
abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Happy Birthday Jerry. We love you so much. Please watch over Chela, Jeremy, Jacob and the rest of the family. We know you're celebrating your birthday with Jesus.

September 16, 2005

Jerry, My heart broke when I was watching the news and heard your name. I remember thinking, "OH PLEASE DON'T LET IT BE THE SAME JERRY ORTIZ." When they said you were 35 I knew it had to be you. We use to live right in front of you on Live Oak Street in Cudahy. We use to play everyday. Me, Tito and Bobby, you Tury and Sylvia. Sylvia was my best friend. I remember your cute curly hair, and the way you use to talk with a little lisp. You and Bobby and Popo and Quio use to play cops and robbers. Who would have ever thought you would be a police officer when you grew up! I feel so sad that we lost touch after we moved away in 1976. Throughout the years I thought of you guys and wondered where you all were and how your lives were going. I always remembered your birthdays too. Sylvia (5/7), Tury (4/30) and you Jerry, SEPTEMBER 16TH. That is why I thought of you today and looked for you on the internet. So, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! I know you are celebrating up in heaven. If any of the family is reading this, please say hi to Rosa for me. I remember her so clearly from when I was little. She was such a caring lady. Her and my mom (Susie) were like Lucy & Ethel. My prayers are with all of you.

I work with Jerry at Mens central jail (MCJ) and when he transfered to Industry station from Century station. Jerry was one of those guys who had the "knack" for finding bad guys. He was truly a professional! The thing that was really impressive about him was the fact that he Loved his fellow Deputies. Jerry always wore that poster boy smile. There were times when the department wasn't treating him so nice but he "always" remained positive and focused. When ever I would run into Jerry he always talked about his career goals and where he saw himself in the future. It goes without saying how much this great man and cop will be missed.
