Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Roger Dale Lynch
Words Cannot give reasonable explanation of what you endured on that sad day. Deputy Lynch, We know now you was not scared nor were you going to relenquish to such turmoil or deviance. In fact you kept your word when you recieved the call for service, and gave the ultimate sacrifice, and in the end, the good had prevailed. may god bless you SIR!

My fiancé, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in SE Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Roger did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Roger be the last to die this way.
Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Deputy Lynch's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through these tough times, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you and that you are not alone in your "journey". Should you ever need anything please do not hesitate to contact me. (Dennis' department will also always know how to reach me.)
As a fallen officer "survivor" and a friend, please accept my condolences on behalf of myself and the McElderry family. I never got the opportunity to know Roger but, I am certain Roger was well respected and well loved. He will live on in the hearts of all the lives he touched. You were lucky to have had him be a part of your lives. I am know that Roger will continue to watch over us all as only he can.
Thank you Deputy Lynch for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiancé Dennis.
Wishing you brighter and better days,
Jocelyne

His actions may not have saved his own life, but they saved the lives of those who came after him. His family should know that his final act was saving the lives of fellow Officers who would follow him into that house.

My name is Judy. I am Roger's sister. I first want to say thank you to every Honor Guard who stood guard over Roger's body until he was laid to rest. I also want to thank every officer who attended my brother's funeral. I am truly speechless as I try to find the words to thank you. You touched all of our hearts so deeply. When we drove up to the church on the day of his funeral and witnessed the sea of police cars- it was one of the most awesome sights that I have ever seen. To see all of you surrounding the inside of the church during his service was so overwhelming. I know that many of you did know him but I also realize that many of you did not know him and were there out of respect. It was and is so appreciated. Thank you to everyone who had a part in the service at the cemetery. Everything was done with such respect and professionalism. His death has left a hole in our hearts that will never heal. He made us proud and it is so wonderful to read the kind words that so many of you have written. Thank you for the jobs that each of you do. May God richly bless each of you with health, happiness and safety! Blessings, Judy Coleman

You are a true hero Dep. Lynch. Had you not killed your assailant, God only knows how many other Officers could have been killed by this man. I shudder at the thought. R.I.P. brave warrior.

Thanks to everyone who has written such awesome statements to Roger's family and co workers. Roger was a wonderful deputy with a great sense of humor and had such a calming effect on people. We were always glad to have Roger assist us in our work because he understood our job and kept us safe as well. We appreciate our sheriff's department and the Kentucky State Police for all they do for us and our agency. Roger, we miss you. Thank you for all you've done for this town and this county.

AS I SIT BACK AND REFLECT ON THAT DARK NIGHT, MY HEART GRIEVES. AS I CLOSE MY EYES, I RELIVE THAT HORRIBLE NIGHT. I WAS ON THE AMBULANCE THE NIGHT ROGER WAS TAKEN, OH WHAT A HELPLESS FEELING WHEN THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO TO HELP YOUR BROTHER. ROGER WAS A WONDERFUL OFFICER, AND A GREAT FRIEND. DEPUTY LYNCH WAS LIKE A FATHER FIGURE TO ME, I MENTORED HIM FROM THE DAY HE WAS SWORN IN. A GREAT VOID HAS BEEN LEFT IN THE HEARTS OF MYSELF AND EVERYONE CLOSE TO ROGER. WORDS CAN NEVER EXPRESS THE HONOR IT HAS BEEN TO WORK SO CLOSELY WITH THIS MAN. ROGER TRULY IS A HERO, AND WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN, THAN HE WHO LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS" ROGER SAVED THE LIFE OF MANY THAT NIGHT, AND WILL FORVEVER BE A HERO. MY DEEPEST LOVE AND ALL MY PRAYERS GO OUT TO DEBBIE, AMANDA, AND DAVID. WE LOVE YOU AND GOD BLESS.

"We Remember the Officers"
We remember the officers who changed our lives, The men and woman who protected us day and night,
People who respect for their dedication to the cause,
For when faced with danger, they never even pause.
We remember the officers who always stood true, Whatever the color of uniform, brown gray or blue,
With pride and integrity they say "To serve and protect", For the giving of their life, we offer our respect.
We remember the officers who we never really knew, Persons strong enough to answer the challenge are few,
With heavy hearts we mourn the officers in eternal rest,
There's more to these people than the badge on their chest.

The loss of a brother saddens all officers regardless of the color of the uniform. My heart goes out to the remaining Deputies of the Livingston County Sheriff's Department.
When God closes one door, he in turn opens many more. The void that was left with the passing of Roger will be hard to fill. However, Roger was a hero and he was proud to know that he saved the lives of the victims in this call.
To Sheriff Tommy Williams and all of the Law Enforcement Community of Livingston County, your brothers in blue of the Louisville Metro Police Department will forever have you in our thoughts and prayers.

February 27, 2004, is a date I will never forget. While doing home visits, I pulled up in the driveway of a probationer to find him shooting shotguns with his dad and uncle. Knowing that I could not allow this to be going on, I knew I had to stop it but it was me against three. So, I called Livingston County S.O., like I had done on many occasions, and found Deputy Lynch was on duty. Acting calmly, as always, Deputy Lynch got the address I was at and told me he'd be there in a minute, even though I was at least ten minutes away, halfway across the county. While waiting, I was seen by my probationer who immediately tossed the shotgun in the back of the truck and started walking toward me looking pretty upset. His dad and uncle joined him pretty quick in yelling, cussing, and threatening me. Unsure of whether I would be able to leave that home that day, I looked up and seen that blue cruiser come down the road and turn in the driveway. Deputy Lynch came walking across that field to where I was standing and took care of business like he always did, with a few soft spoken words and demeanor which no one could argue with. Every day I think of that moment when Deputy Lynch came walking across that field and the feeling of safety I got. Every time I look at my two young sons, I think of that moment and what may have happened had Deputy Lynch not arrived as quick as he did. Deputy Lynch became my hero that day and his memory will live as long as I remember that day. It will be hard to go to Livingston County and not hear Deputy Lynch telling me with a laugh, "You need to watch your people better..." and hear that laugh that so many of us remember. Thank you for your service and always being there to answer the call from anyone who needed help. Godspeed

Roger will be greatly missed by our agency. He was a friend and someone we knew would be there to help in time of need. I worked many calls with Roger and he was always very profesional but also a kind and giving person. I admired the way Roger could talk with people in a friendly manner and he most often left the home with everyone smiling. It is very hard to understand why something like this has to happen but Roger had a strong faith in God and I know that he was ready to go home.

My deepest condolences and prayers to the family, friends , and co-workes of Deputy Lynch. He is in God's hands now and is watching over us. We lost our own Deputy 1 month ago, so I feel your pain. We have lost a brother. To the dispatchers.... you will survive, and it WILL be hard. There will be tears, laughter, and anger. That's all part of it. But NEVER forget the memories. NOBODY can take those away. You are in our prayers always. God bless you.
