Reflections for Detective Donald Ray Young

Just starting to workout and pulled out a t-shirt to wear that commemorated the 2nd Annual Donny Young Memorial ride. I still think about you Donny and what a great guy and fellow Bomb Squad member you were. You’re never forgotten my friend! Hey buddy, how about putting in a good word to God for all the first responders down here trying to make a difference! They could sure use it! This world you left is not the same! Peace brother!

Donnie was a neighbor and friend. Every year during Mother's Day (it was that day in 2005 when Donnie was killed), I reflect on this horrible incident. The perp escaped but a month later was brought back and convicted. RIP Donnie, your LE family looked after your wife and kids.

As the memory of your sacrifice draws near my brother. I can only feel gratitude for knowing you while at work, softball or just those times sharing a drink and laughter. Rest in Paradise my friend.

Donnie was a neighbor, brother in law of a co-worker and wonder guy. This was a devastating loss. His wife and two beautiful girls stayed in the neighborhood after his death.

I knew him outside of work, He was killed by an illegal immigrant that worked at John Hickenlooper's restaurant. Hickenlooper has still never taken any responsibility for hiring an illegal that later murdered a cop.

My reflection from 2006 reads, "Donnie, Your funeral was the first I attended as a member of the law enforcement community. It was life changing. Denver police Chief described police officers as “guardians on the wall” protecting the good of this world from evil. The funeral procession was marked patrol cars with lights flashing as far as I could see. Citizens gathered on the side of the road. They held their hands over their hearts. These are images that have inspired me to become a police officer. To a true guardian on the wall, Thank You"

I am now 16 years into my career and a Detective too. You are close to my thoughts and heart always. Please continue to watch over and protect us during these troubling times. And today, thank you for helping me remember why I became a guardian on the wall. <3

Denver officers attend wedding for daughter of detective killed in the line of duty
Posted On FOX 31 KDVR, November 17, 2019

Denver police officers attend the wedding for Kourtney Young. Kourtney is the daughter of Det. Donnie Young who was killed in the line of duty in 2005.(Denver Police Department)

DENVER — Several Denver police officers were on hand last month when Kourtney Young made her vows at her wedding.

Young is the oldest daughter of Denver Police Detective, Donnie Young who was killed in the line of duty in 2005 when he was working off duty at a party.

Donnie and another detective were in uniform at a banquet hall and wouldn’t let a man inside. That man returned with a gun, approached both officers from behind and shot them. The other detective survived and the suspect fled to Mexico where he was eventually arrested.

At the festivities, officers took turns dancing with Kourtney during the traditional father daughter dance.

In a Facebook post the department says, “The moment was one for the books and a reminder that law enforcement is family and family is forever.”

Those days I will never forget.

Donnie..... It's been 12 years, where did 12 years go? Not a day goes by that I don't think about you and what a goofball you were with us back then and how much you taught us. May 8th will never be the same, it was Mother's day in 2005. I have made a good career as a cop now and I hope you are proud.

I am 10 years in now, and I know you have had my back the whole time. I will never forget you and what you meant to me. I wasn't able to make it to Ft. Logan today and I'm sorry. Rest in peace my brother and friend

I grew up with Don when I was young. He and I walked to school together. He protected me when we had to walk through a field where there was fighting rings. He was amazing.

Every year this date is a difficult one; this year seems a little harder due to the fact if falls on Mother's Day. A little hard to celebrate a day for mom's when such a special dad was taken away. Our girls have grown into such great people, you left a special mark on their heart. We miss you everyday and will never stop loving you.

It's hard to think that it was 10 years ago that you were taken. I will never forget that night as long as I live. We still tell stories about old times and talk about you often. I wasn't able to make it to Denver yesterday to pay my respects so I wanted to say something on here. We miss you Donnie, thank you for looking out for us from heaven.
