To the family and friends of Sgt. Gerald Vick and the men and women of the St. Paul Police Department, you have my deepest sympathy.

I am sure Gerald is resting easy now and am certain he is in the good company of all our other fallen brothers.

They are all no doubt looking down on us now, watching after us as we pick up Gerald's shift.

My fiancé, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in southeast Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Gerald did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Gerald be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Sergeant Vick's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you. If you ever need anything please do not hesistate to contact me. Dennis' department will always know how to reach me.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Gerald is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Gerald was well respected and well loved. You were blessed to have had him in your life, even for a short time.

Thank you Sergeant Vick for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiancé Dennis for me.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

My prayers and thoughts go out to the family and friends of Sgt. Vick. Our community as a whole is left with a void. Also, a thank you is in order to all those men and women who traveled near and far to attend the services yesterday. The sadness of the day was lifted somewhat by your impressive show of support for a man who, like me, most of you had never met. May you never have to do it again and God Bless Sgt. Vick.

Sgt Vick - The stories we've heard this week have taught us many lessons. Specifically the honor and dignity with which you treated those you dealt with, victim and suspect alike. We will never forget. Our thoughts are with your family and SPPD.

I first met Officer Vick in 1994 when I was assigned to the EAST team as a probationary officer. You see I was one of the fortunate new St. Paul Police Officer's assigned to learn how to be a St. Paul Police Officer from F.T.O. Vick. I can without reservation sat that I am a a better person and Police Officer/Chief today because of the time I spent learning from Vick.
Words cannot express the loss and sorrow that MYSELF and others wearing the uniform feels. My thoughts and prayers are with Connie, your two children, immediate famaily and friends. You will never be forgotten given the impact you made upon myself and everyone you came in contact with. Closing, I want to sincerely thank you for being my mentor, coach and most importantly a friend. When I feel out of favor with management and other members of the department looked away and shunned me you always had a positive word to say to me and that meant a lot. THANKS, Vick-your my hero.

Sgt. Vick was A Corrections Officer before he was a Police Officer. Because of this my boss sent DOC employees the following E-mail I would like to share:

A STATEMENT FROM MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS COMMISSIONER JOAN FABIAN

The following is a statement from Commissioner Joan Fabian regarding the tragic death of Sgt. Jerry Vick, who served as a corrections officer from 1987-89 at Minnesota’s maximum-security facility at Oak Park Heights:

As a corrections officer, he made outstanding contributions to the profession and was highly respected by his colleagues. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sgt.
