Reflections for Sergeant Gerald Dennis Vick

I still remember the day you went away Jerry, like it was 5 minutes ago. I woke up around 0630, I was just getting ready to go to work. When I turned on the news I saw what I never imagined I would see again since Ronnie and Nip...I saw the east side a war zone...once again. Is this real? or am I just imagining this. The newscaster was too busy telling everyone about what type of guns the CIRT team was using to tell me who was killed. Finally on the teleprompter on the bottom of the screen, they wrote your name and that you died at regions around 2:30am. My god, I was sleeping at 2:30 in the morning, while you lay bleeding in an alley not even a mile from my home...what a world? Distain, anger and despair could not and still cannot describe what I feel towards the cowards that killed you that morning Jerry. If I forget everything else, I will remember the whop, whop, whop of the ARNG helicopter looking for your killers, or the being able to see every single yellow space marker at the east team lot, because they were all the squads were there for you Jerry, not to mention our teams were empty, but state and other metro agencies came to bat for us and more importantly...you Jerry. I know if you were alive, you would say thanks. But let me take the opportunity to say thank you to you, for being so civil and dignified in your short time alive. Your presence and courage that fateful night will not soon be forgotten. You are truly a cop's cop. Rest in peace Jerry, I'll miss you.

My deepest sympathy to Sergeant Vick's family and co-workers up there. I often read the reflections of Officers giving the ultimate sacrifice and try to read them to my Officers so they can feel the true realization of how dangerous their job is; more importantly, how precious life is. I pray that the Good Lord has a division of Sgt. Vick's looking out for us....."True Warrior."

It's hard to write about you Jerry. As a trainer in your academy you stood out, but wow, what you did when you were let go! You have embodied everything we try to be Supervisor, investigator, cop, friend, family man. You did more for the community and victims of crime than almost anyone I have seen in my 25 years with the PD. Many of the suspects were victims to you and you made a difference in their lives. We are all better for having known you, and diminished by your loss.
Thank You

Gerald,
I thank you for the ultimate sacrifice and for proudly wearing the uniform everyday. I pray that your family is able to find peace and happiness at the end of this long journey. Though nothing will ease the pain of your death, I hope that the person responsible receives the ultimate punishment. Look Bran up in heaven and take a cruise on the great highway with him. Tell him we miss him more than anything here on earth and we'll see you all on the other side somday.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of officer Vick and the other officers of the city of Saint Paul. I hope that when the coward that did this comes to trial that he gets the strongest harshest punishment possible.

He was always the guy that any one could talk to. He always took the time to ask how you were doing, and cared about your answer. I know a lot of people say that about other people, but with Jerry it was true. We will miss him, all of us.

To Mrs. Vick, to Jerry's children and extended family, and to the St. Paul PD... You have all been in my prayers this past week. The St. Paul PD is near and dear to my heart.

I attended the funeral and although it was so very sad, I left with an intense pride in my heart from witnessing the hundreds upon hundreds upon hundreds of officers who came to show their support. Rest in peace, Sgt. Vick... your brothers and sisters in blue will carry on from here.
