Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Larry Elwood Lasater, Jr.

To the Lasater/Loya Family…First I want to offer my heartfelt condolences…in the loss of your son…husband…father…and…brother. He will not be forgotten.

As this is National Police Week…I will remember your loved one…and your family...in my prayers.

I read the reflection left…by Ms. Loya…another mother…grieving the loss of her son…on my brother’s ODMP site. Thank you for posting…and you are correct… time does not diminish respect…honor…or…reverence….and the pain and pride…are forever.

I lost my NYS Trooper brother…in 1961…and his namesake…my son…who was born in 1968…was tragically killed in 2006. Both were devastating losses…to our family. So I know…how painful it is…to lose both a sibling…and a young adult child.

But I have also been blessed…because of a mutual bond…those of us who come to this site…now have. We understand each other’s hearts…and have become in a way…extended families…because of our “new normal…forever changed lives" …which has us wanting to reach out…to others…who are also walking this path.

I have become an email friend…to Bob & Carol Gordon…via their son Michael…and because of my brother…and my son…both Salvatore’s. The Gordon’s are very caring…kind and compassionate human beings. They are very supportive…to many of us…who visit this ODMP site...and while. I don’t know how they make the time…God bless them for it. They have become the “link” between so many of us.

I hope Mrs. Lasater and her son…know that Larry…is watching over them…and his family…from a far better place…than the one he was called from…far too soon…and that someday…they will be together again.

May God Bless each of you…and may Larry…for making the ultimate sacrifice...while serving and protecting...Rest in God’s Perpetual Light...and Eternal Peace.

I often wonder what I would say to you if I could see you one more time. And I have come to the conclusion that there are not words sufficient for that moment.

I would simply hold you and cry and I would whisper that I love and miss you, my beloved son. I always have. I always will.

Our hearts do not really need any words at all.

Thank you for the reflection you gave to my grandfather, Detective Rafael Cotto. I also appreciate the ultimate service your son has sacrificed for his family and his country.

8 years since I last saw you. It's hard to believe! Usually Cody and I help the Chief with the wreath at the ceremony but I told him this year it was time for him to take over. He did a wonderful job.
Cody had a great baseball season and I'm a little sad that it's over. He loved it more this year. His big cousins Joseph, Vince, Nick, Daniel and Dominic all watched him play this year. Also some of my friends came out to watch.
DC is coming up! I am so glad Cody feels so at home with my parents and my sisters. They will split the week up but of course Cody wants to spend every night with his favorite cousin Dominic. He's so excited to fly to DC with Dominic and meet me at the wall. I completed my last training ride and I'm (as you would say) good to go. Love you

Your remembrance ceremony was so beautiful...it was overwhelming to see how many people honored you that day. Cody was such a little gentleman helping the new Chief (and old friend) lay your wreath. There was also a Corps presence with a Marine in dress uniform and a member of the Brentwood Marine Corps League. There were three flags blowing in the wind...Old Glory, the Marine Corps Flag, and the POW MIA flag. A fitting day of tribute to you!

I think your Marine brother Mark's reflection summed up the esteem with which you are held and how much you are remembered by those who shared your life. The Amex reference made me chuckle...in a good way.

When I saw Cody on the field at his ballgame a week ago, he looked so much like you at that age. I know you were looking down with pride at your beautiful son and wife.

Loving you forever and a day.

Thank you Officer Lasater for your dedication and service to this country and your community. You are a true hero. My thoughts are with your family, may they: "Stay Strong, Stay Safe, and Stay Positive." (a motto my son left behind and has inspired me to stay focused thru this journey thru grief.) Your mother's gift of positive words and your wife's strong determination to ride with the Unity tour is so inspiring to other survivors. God Bless!

Slash,

Today I woke up knowing this is the day we lost you. Your loss today hurts as much as it did 8 years ago. Nothing for us has changed in terms of the pain and simply missing you. However, we now think of this day as “Larry’s Day.” Thinking of you intensifies in March, every spring, and culminates for us on this day.

I cannot help thinking about how much fun we would have as fathers and friends…man this day hurts and feels good at the same time. You chose a selfless profession that makes the world and the communities we live in civil and free. The price for that freedom and quality of life seems at times unbearably high, especially for JoAnn, Cody, Phyllis, and all of your buddies in the Corps.

There are so many times I thought of you this last year…Greg’s wedding and Change of Command, the Marine Corps Birthday, Cody’s birthday, the Final Four, the heroic actions of law enforcement in Boston, every time I using my @!#@ AMEX, and every time I hear of the loss of another police officer…anywhere.

Slash one thing has absolutely never changed for me and that is you are loved and missed.

Thinking of you and your family as the anniversary of when you were taken from them is coming up. Your mother left a very nice reflection for my dad, and I wanted to make sure we remembered you as well. Rest in peace and tell my dad hello from me and that I love and miss him so much! Hope we will get to meet your family at the CPOA memorial run this year on May11th!

Tomorrow Cody gets to bring a special person to school. His first choice was my dad or Dominic. My dad is out of town so he started naming people he could bring. I realized he has some great people in his life when he went down his list. Besides my sisters, everyone he named was a police officer. Two you never met and the others were your friends. I know that would make you grateful to those who have stepped up.

Officer Lasater,

Thank you for your hard work, your dedication to the job, and for the ultimate sacrifice you paid to keep strangers, your friends, your family, and your city safe. You are a HERO!

JoAnn, Phyllis, and Cody,

Your husband, your son, your father will always remain in my prayers. You all, as well, will always be in my prayers. May God watch over you and keep you safe. May Larry watch over you and keep you safe. I can tell that he is a great man and an important man to each of you, but I think that would be an understatement.

8 years is coming up quick. I can't believe it. It sometimes seems like yesterday that I kissed you goodbye, and sometimes it seems like it's been so long. Sometimes I look at Cody and I'm shocked that he's almost 8. What a kid. Those who know him agree what a great kid he is. Love you
