Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Larry Elwood Lasater, Jr.

I saw this poem and thought of you and how you lived your life.

"So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people. Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide. Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and grovel to none. When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself. Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fool sand robs the spirit of its vision. When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home. "

Yesterday was the 239th Birthday of the Marine Corps and today is Veterans Day. You served your country so well and truly were the most patriotic person I knew.

Justice was rendered a few weeks ago when one of the two men who were convicted of your murder was sentenced to life without possibility of parole once again for the third time. The courtroom was packed with family, friends, and your police brothers and sisters.

You are forever in our hearts. Loving you forever and a day.

I was brought here because I saw a remembrance left by your mother while on the page of another fallen officer. May you rest in peace, sir.

Officer Lasater,
It was an honor to be trained at the Law Enforcement Training Center in Pittsburg, Ca., where you too were trained. Not one day went by where you were not remembered, or talked about during our classroom lectures or PT sessions. Your life and legacy inspired us to train with purpose and to dedicate our careers for those who served before us. Continue to watch over us. Class 160: We Face What Most Fear.

Good Morning Sir,
I am almost done with my shift and was thinking about you and another of our brothers that was killed in Oceanside in 2006. I know you have met him up there. I was in Jr. High and High school with him before joining the Corps and meeting you. I am blessed for having not only known you but having served under your command. You were a great man and I when times get tough for me here, I just remember why we do this job. I still have the card I bought in Iraq when I heard the news. I couldn't mail it out though. I think for me it would have confirmed that it was real. I take solice in knowing that while horrible things happen here on earth, it won't always be bad for us. I am glad that you have such a strong family left here to not only tell your story but to help others in their time of need. I know it gives me strength to know there is still some good left here. Semper Fi Sir. I will never forget you...ever.

Today is National Remembrance Day for Murder Victims but you, my beloved son, are remembered and honored every day. Candle lit and blue light on as I remember all law enforcement officers murdered while protecting us, and send prayers for all murder victims and their families.

Your mother left a reflection on my great grandfather's memorial page and I want to thank her and to honor your family by remembering you. You were, I am sure, an incredible son and husband, patriot and friend. You were taken too soon. Please know that there are those of us who don't forget all the good that you brought to a broken world.

Last week we faced one of your murderers in the courtroom again, but your family will never give up fighting for justice for you. My fervent prayer is for justice at the resentencing hearing now set for Fall.

It was a hard week for my heart broke just a little more for reasons I know you understand. There are so many things I always treasured in you, among them your understanding and kind heart, and I am still comforted that you know my heart as well. So with that, your mom sends her unwavering love to you. Loving you forever and a day.

Cody and I miss you! I feel like it's us against the world sometimes. I am the only constant in his life besides my parents. Luckily he doesn't realize how bad he has is although he truly misses you and loves you. I love you...

My heart breaks when I think of all you have missed since April 24, 2005. Yesterday Cody and I played checkers and as I looked at his beautiful little face, it reminded me of you when you were that age. So many moments flashed in my mind, especially Cody moments, when I thought about how much you would have reveled in the delight of physically sharing childhood experiences with him. Jo Ann has made sure he knows his Dad, and he has such a connection with you that it is amazing. Loving you forever and a day.

I know you are beaming with pride for your son and for JoAnn. They both are inspirations to others, just as you were and are. I am lucky to be able to keep up with their adventures, as you know they are many and are hilarious... I just wanted to thank you for your service and continued inspiration. So much has happened in the last few weeks. Your beautiful remembrance ceremony hosted by your department. Your son Cody having his first communion...what a special day and I was so privileged to share in it. Your son is simply amazing. The state Law Enforcement Memorial ceremony to honor our California fallen officers. The bad news that we once again have to go through a third resentencing hearing for one of the two individuals who took you from us, but the immediate outreach of support for us and the knowledge that we will stand strong united to fight for justice for you.

Your older brother James will take me to the airport on Mothers Day for my trip to D.C. for Law Enforcement week. I am so privileged to be the mom of two wonderful sons and I was so blessed to have had you physically here with me for 35 years. I am looking forward to seeing Jo Ann as she rides in on the Police Unity Tour next week. We are very proud of her. As always, you remain in my heart and soul.

Loving you forever and a day,

Mom

You have not been forgotten, nor will that ever be the case as true heroes never die. Continue to keep watch over your loved ones, protect them from harm.

"I heard someone whisper your name,
When I turned around to see who it was
I found myself alone.
Then I knew, it was my heart missing You."
