Reflections for Sergeant Daniel Paul Figgins

Rest in peace Sergeant Figgins.

To the Figgins Family
Last year, I visited the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C. I had remembered my father mentioning the passing of Sgt Figgins when I was 11, and I made sure to pay my respects to Sgt Figgins during my visit. I now share the same profession as both Sgt Figgins and my father, Officer Figgins. I did not personally know Sgt Figgins, however it is apparent that he touched the lives of many. Rest In Peace Sgt Figgins.

Think of you often Sgt. Dan. Our midnight shifts together, the fingerless gloves, the swisher sweets we shared to break the boredom. I was given your badge # after you were promoted, and you handed me your spare, which I keep close everyday. Your picture hangs in our roll call room.....still looking over us. Thanks for your guidance and leadership through some rough times..... You would be proud of us today!

Today it will be 5 years since you were called away. For some it will seem like just yesterday, but for others it has felt like a lifetime since they heard your voice, felt your touch and seen your warm smile. Your brother is keeping your memory alive by saving other officers with his heart check program in your honor. Continue to watch over all of your loved ones. I would like to end with this quote from Albert Pike:
"What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us;
What we have done for others and the world, remains
and is immortal."

Dan,

It is hard to believe it has been 5 years almost to the hour of your death. I am going over to the incident site in a few minutes to remember you along with your midnight shift. They miss the humor, laughs and fun you brought to the shift. I am sure plenty of tears will be shed, but I would bet a few laughs too!

Later on today we have invited a few people to the site and I have heard that many are attending, so we should shed some more tears there too...but we will make sure to laugh also.

We all ready miss you, but we move forward helping others as much as we can. I just wished you had the chance to see your precious grandchildren, they look so much like you! I think with that and the 5 year mark has really made this week rough for all of us. I stopped by Linda's earlier today and I could tell she was having a rough day, please reach down from Heaven and give her a hug today! We love and miss you!

I sent you a message by way of Jesus on this year's Christmas card: Jesus, please this message relay:
Tell Dan we miss him more and more each day.
Tell him that a new little Danile has arrived for whom we are to care.
We wish that he were here to share.
He is a special likeness of his daddy, but the part
That looks like his mommy (because it looks like you) goes straight to our heart.
Jesus, tell Dan how much Dylan has grown.
Tell him that he warms my heart and I never feel alone.
He is such a special little oby
He calls me NANA - Oh what a Joy!
Jesus, tell Dan that Kylie Marie arrived in September
It is a day thjat I will always remember.
She is so beautiful and her smile is to be treasured.
The effect it has on us can not be measured.
Jesus, I say thank you for providing me with such joys -
One precious little girl and two cherished little boys.

Dan - you would be so proud of the special family your love has provided. I miss you precious man. Your Wife, Linda

Last week I rode a bicycle over 300 miles in your memory in the ILCOPS Cycle Across Illinois. At times it was a challenge and hard, but going up a few hills, I felt your hand on my back helping, and knew you were there. Miss you...

I came across Sgt. Figgins' memorial today Feb. 13 2009. It always hits me hard when we lose a brother, but to see Daniel Figgins in a memorial shook me a little. We are close in age,I'm 60 now and retired, but I never knew of another Daniel Figgins. And in law enforcement on top of it.

Best wishes and prayers to the wife and family. Would love to meet you in person sometime.

Take care and keep safe.

Love,
