Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Kurt Andrew Ford

As a former police officer with the Hesston Police Dept, I first met Kurt when he responded to Hesston to assist me with a call. From the start, Kurt made me feel like a friend. He was always ready to lend a hand, either professionally or personally. On the first night I returned to duty, after my Father died, I backed Kurt up on a DUI stop, just south of town. After completing the testing and securing the driver in his patrol car, Kurt came over to me and put his arms around me and gave me a hug. He let me know that if I needed anything, I was to give him a call. To Kurt, family was everything. He may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.

Kirk you will be sorely missed. I remember some really good times that we had doing some great training together. You were one of the best people that I have known, a great husband, father, police officer and friend. You always had a smile and a kind word for everyone.

Jill

My heart goes out to you. I cannot find the words to say how sorry I am for your loss. I pray that God will help you and your family through these tough times.

I used to kid Kurt in front of other deputies about being too old to be on our SWAT Team but in private I told him often how very proud of him I was. One of his favorite sayings was to "slap a howdy" on someone. Everyone loved him. I loved him.

It was my pleasure to have been Kurt's supervisor in our training unit before he left Douglas County. More importantly, it was my pleasure to have been considered his friend. Before Kurt decided to leave, he and I spent a lot of time together; Kurt and I were driving instructors as well as firearms instructors together. I had the joy of spending many hours with Kurt on the track and on the range. He always had some goofy story, or he would laugh at something you said, or he would find some other way to make you feel better if you were having a bad day. I could never be mad at Kurt for very long...he was just one of those people. His attitude was contagious. We butted heads a few times, but we were friends and quickly made our peace with each other before he left for Kansas, by then we knew it would be too late. I missed him badly when he left for Kansas, his "home", and I miss him even more now. We had talked regularly via email and planned on a hunting trip in the fall for one of those legendary Kansas whitetails. Kurt, you will forever be a dear friend and huntin' buddy! It was obvious that Kurt was excited about going "home" where he could be near the ones he loved. I know how much he loved his wife and those two beautiful boys; his face lit up every time he talked about them.

Kurt, thank you for being my friend (I hope you were right and that I'll see you on the other side!) I miss you!

I grew up in Harvey County and knew Kurt as I was in High school growing up. When I began my law enforcement journey in 1998 in Halstead, Kurt was Chief of Police in Hesston. He taught some classes that I attended. Kurt was a very smart man. He was a very brave man. We will all miss him very much. My prayers are with his family and the Deputies of the Harvey County Sheriff's Office.

I had the privilege of dispatching for Kurt from 1989-1993 in Harvey County. I moved to Colorado in 1993, but have always thought of Kurt as a wonderful young man, a wonderful Sheriff’s Deputy and a wonderful friend. His smile brightened the day of everyone he came in contact with. My thoughts and prayers are with Kurt’s wife and children, as well as his dispatchers and law enforcement family. May God bless and keep you.

My mother told me that once when she collapsed at her job at the Hesston Corporation, they were loading her into an ambulance, and a very nice police officer checked on her to see how was doing and made sure she was going to be ok.. That officer turned out to be Deputy Ford. She always remembered that, and I am so glad there was someone there to help her not be so scared.
It saddens me greatly, that an officer near my old home, and an officer near my new home (Sheriff Matt Samuels) have been taken from us all in less than 6 months. Deputy Ford gave his life protecting a community full of my friends and relatives, and for that I will be forever greatful for his service.
Mrs. Ford, I can not fathom your sorrow.. My fiancee is a LEO, and you are living out every wife, fiancee, girlfriend, and families worst nightmare.. I will pray every night that your pain lessens.. As I know it could never go away.
God Bless Deputy Ford, and please pray Detective Eilert comes through this ok..
