Kurt and I were on together at the Douglas County SO. The one thing that you could always count on from Kurt was a smile. Kurt was never afraid to pitch in and give you everything he had. He was a great man and a great human being. He will be missed.

Where do I even begin? I feel like you are still here with us Kurt. You are and will forever be a hero. When I think of you, I think of someone we all wish we could be. A wonderful officer, husband, father and friend. Who can forget the fun times we all had at the SWAT parties with you, Jill, Preston and Adam? Who can forget that contagious smile and words of encouragement you were always so willing to give? Who can forget getting pages from Kurt, wishing them a happy birthday? One day, my tears will dry up but my memories of you will never be gone. I am thankful to God for the time we had with you and I will see you again one day. To Jill, Preston and Adam, you are in our prayers- we love and miss you!

Kurt (Odie) was like a father to me. Anytime that I needed someone to talk to, you could expect to find Kurt right there at my side to talk to me about it. Always had a smile on his face and making new friends. When he would arrest someone, by the time the arrest was over, he would be shaking hands with them and laughing. He was a out going and caring man. Harvey County couldn't have asked for another great officer. He will truely be missed by everyone. Kurt....keep watch over all of us. You will miss you so much.

Souls Do Not Disintegrate and Die:

Souls do not disintegrate and die,
Years pass and yet they do not fade away.
Memories are like a distant star
Pouring forth its light across the void.
All our tears and laughter do not lie,
Though we pass like dreams, our spirits stay,
Held fast by love, which is just what we are,
Yet in a form that cannot be destroyed.
Friend of someone close

It's hard to describe my feelings since I heard the news early Saturday morning. SWAT is a brotherhood, and it's my honor to call Kurt my brother.
SWAT officers don't risk their lives to be heros, in this case Kurt risked his life to protect someone who uas unable to protect herself. In doing so, he showed each of us why he was a hero to so many.
I don't know why God chose to take my brother at this time, but I can't think of anyone else I would want watching over me. My prayers and thoughts go out to Jill and the boys, I know he is watching over you too.

I am nowhere near Kansas, but as a former victim of domestic violence, I am struck dumb with sacrifice of Deputy Ford, and the willingness of both he and Hesston police Detective Chris Eilert to put their lives on the line for a complete stranger who was so in need of heroes. I am so sorry to all those wounded by this - the families, the agencies, the communities, and everyone else grieving with you. May the woman who escaped alive live her life from this day forward as if it is as precious to her as it was to these 2 law officers who came to help her, and may the families of Deputy Ford and Detective Eilert be ever-overwhelmed with the GREATNESS of their actions. I can't think of anything more selfless than *knowingly* putting your own life at risk, in the path of evil, for the life of a stranger. (God knows.)

I would just like to tell you how thankful i'am for all the help you have givin me. Whenever i had a question, you would answer it, and then some. Whenever I needed help, you were there to give me your look on the situation, and try to help me under stand. I will always remember the good times we had. I still tell people about the picture problem we had. I will always remember how good of a man you were, and how you always had your mind on the community, putting in many unpaid hours to our Explorer Post. You are a very honourable and brave man. You have done some things that the average man would turn and run from, and for that, you will remembered and missed. I look forward to meeting you again. -Quinn Wheeler

Kurt, although you were only with us here in Shawnee for a short time, you had a very positive impact on our Police Department. By reading the reflections left in your memory, it's obvious you made that same impact where ever you went. Our prayers go out to your family so they may be comforted in this time of loss. Thank you for your service to each community you touched.

Kurt, my friend, fellow instructor, and brother in blue. You touched all of us with your sense of duty, honor, and your sense of humor. You were always there to help others both on the job and off. I know that you are still with us in mind and spirit. Our paths in life crossed for a good reason and I have been enriched because of it. For that i thank you my friend.

Kurt always had a smile on his face & a joke or prank to pull. He was an officer who did whatever it took to get the job done. Unfortunately, this time it took too much. Our prayers are with you & your family. Take it easy my friend, we'll take it from here.

By Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, with Loren Christensen: "Honor never grows old, and honor rejoices the heart of age. It does so because honor is, finally, about defending those noble and worthy things that deserve defending, even if it comes at a high cost. In our time, that may mean social disapproval, public scorn, hardship, persecution, or as always, even death itself. The question remains: What is worth defending? What is worth dying for? What is worth living for?" Kurt, you new these answers. You are a true warrior walking the warriors path. For Jill and the boys, remember Kurt was and will always be a hero.

I had the privilege of not only working with Kurt while he was with our Sheriff's Office, but also in pistol competitions. He didn't have a bad bone in him. If you were having a bad day, he would pick you up. He was blessed with having the ability to know when someone was having a bad day. He would take the time to talk and bring your spirits up. He had an award winning smile that seemed to penetrate any darkness. He was truly a friend. I will miss you brother, and look forward to seeing you again some day.
